Vogelsang, Brandenburg
Vogelsang is a municipality in the Oder-Spree district, in Brandenburg, Germany. It is located near the border with Poland. History From 1815 to 1947, Vogelsang was part of the Prussian Province of Brandenburg. After World War II, Vogelsang was incorporated into the State of Brandenburg from 1947 to 1952 and the Bezirk Frankfurt of East Germany from 1952 to 1990. Vogelsang High Sierra Camp
The High Sierra Camps are nine rustic lodging facilities located in two national parks and a national monument in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. Open most years from June or July to September, they are staffed camps with tent cabins and food service facilities. The backcountry camps receive their supplies by pack mules. Seven camps are located in Yosemite National Park. Five of these camps are located off the road in the wilderness, and are accessible only by hiking or by horseback riding. There are two similar camps which can be reached by automobile, located near the Tioga Road. Six of the camps are arranged along a loop trail long, and each camp can be reached in sequence in a one-day hike from the previous camp. Vogelsang Airfield (Fliegerhorst Vogelsang) is an abandoned World War II military airfield located approximately 3 miles northwest of Schleiden (Nordrhein-Westfalen); approximately 330 miles southwest of Berlin. The airfield is a part of the former Ordensburg Vogelsang military training area. History The airfield was built as part of the Nazi Party estate about 1935 for light courier aircraft operations. It was likely a grass airfield with a small aircraft parking area and possibly a hangar and a station building. In May 1940, as part of the buildup in western Germany prior to the Battle of France, the Luftwaffe stationed Kampfgeschwader 76 (KG 76) with Dornier Do 17Z light bombers, and Jagdgeschwader 3 and 21 (JG 3, JG 21) with Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighters at the airfield. Ordensburg Vogelsang is a former Nazi complex located within the former military training area of Vogelsang in the Eifel National Park in North Rhine-Westphalia. The landmarked and fully preserved complex was used by the Nazi Party between 1936 and 1939 as an educational centre for future leaders. Since 1 January 2006 the area has been open to visitors. Willem Vogelsang (born 1956 in Medemblik) was the deputy director of the International Institute for Asian Studies at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He was also lieutenant colonel in the Dutch armed forces as Project Coordinator for Cultural Affairs, part of the Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC). He retired per 1 January 2021. Early life and education Vogelsang specialises in the history and cultures of Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan. He has written numerous books and articles on the subject. In the 1970s he studied Indian and Iranian languages and cultures at the University of Leiden. He also studied at the University of Cambridge and the Ghent University, Belgium. During his studies, he spent time in Iran, Syria and Afghanistan, where he conducted archaeological fieldwork, notably in the Afghan province of Kandahar.
