Vogelbescherming Nederland
Vogelbescherming Nederland (in English: Society for the Protection of Birds, Netherlands) is the national bird protection organisation for the Netherlands. It is a non-governmental organisation, and it is the Dutch partner in BirdLife International. Vogelbescherming Nederland is one of the oldest existing bird conservation societies. It was founded in 1899 (under the name ''Vereeniging tot Bescherming van Vogels''), based in part on a forerunner society ''Bond ter Bestrijding eener Gruwelmode'' founded in 1892 whose mission was primarily to oppose the hunting of birds for the use of their feathers in fashion. Among other public events, Vogelbescherming organises the annual ''Tuinvogeltelling'' (garden bird count). Zeist
Zeist () is the capital and largest town of the municipality of Zeist. The town is located in the Utrecht province of the Netherlands, east of the city of Utrecht. History The town of "Seist" was first mentioned in a charter in the year 838. The original settlement was located at the present ''Dorpsstraat''. In the late 12th century, a church was built here. Its tower is now a part of the Reformed Church, the remainder of which was built in the 19th century. Until medieval times, a branch of the river Rhine flowed close to the centre of the town. Three mansions were built near the village: the ''Huis te Zeist'', Kersbergen, and Blikkenburg. From 1677 to 1686, the "Slot Zeist" was built on or near the ruins of "Kasteel Zeist", the original castle (donjon) of Rodgar van Zeist. Non-governmental Organisation
A non-governmental organization (NGO) or non-governmental organisation (see spelling differences) is an organization that generally is formed independent from government. They are typically nonprofit entities, and many of them are active in humanitarianism or the social sciences; they can also include clubs and associations that provide services to their members and others. Surveys indicate that NGOs have a high degree of public trust, which can make them a useful proxy for the concerns of society and stakeholders. Sovon (official name: ''Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland''; English name ''Sovon Dutch Centre for Field Ornithology'') is the national data management organisation for ornithology in the Netherlands. It coordinates bird monitoring and research at a national level according to standardised scientific criteria, and encourages the participation of as many volunteers as possible in bird monitoring. The association is headquartered in Nijmegen. History Sovon was founded in 1973 by three biologists who were at the time involved in research on birds (Luit Buurma, Jan Wattel and Herman Klomp), with the name ''Stichting Ornithologisch Veldonderzoek Nederland'' (SOVON). It was modelled on the British example of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) which was founded with similar objectives forty years earlier.
