Viscount Bennett High School
Viscount Bennett High School was a combined junior and senior high school in the Richmond neighbourhood of Calgary, Alberta that operated from 1955 to 1985. The city's fourth high school, Viscount was built to accommodate the baby boomer generation and the southwest suburbs that had grown rapidly after World War II. At its peak in the mid-1960s, the school had over 2,000 students. Due to the area's ageing population and the opening of other high schools nearby, after only 30 years Viscount Bennett closed in 1985. History Viscount Bennett was formed in the wake of two events. First, the Leduc No. 1 oil discovery in February 1947 started an oil boom that led to the greatest period of growth in Calgary's history. Between 1945 and 1955, Calgary's population roughly doubled from 97,000 to 186,000. Second, the post-war baby boom created the largest generational cohort in Canadian history. Canadian Football Hall Of Fame
The Canadian Football Hall of Fame (CFHOF) is a not-for-profit corporation, located in Hamilton, Ontario, that celebrates achievements in Canadian football. It is maintained by the Canadian Football League (CFL). It includes displays about the CFL, Canadian Interuniversity Sport football, Canadian university football and Canadian Junior Football League, Canadian junior football history. The Hall previously had a main feature in the central portion of the museum where the metal busts of inducted members were displayed prior to the physical building being closed. There were also featured displays that highlight each CFL team's history, and an interactive field goal kicking exhibit. Calgary Buffaloes (AJHL)
The Calgary Buffaloes were a Junior A ice hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League based out of Calgary, Alberta. They were one of the five founding members of the AJHL in 1963. The Buffaloes captured the AJHL title each of their first three seasons, earning the right to face the Edmonton Oil Kings for the right to play for the Memorial Cup. All three seasons, the Buffaloes were defeated by the powerful Oil Kings. In 1965, the cross-town Calgary Cowboys withdrew from the AJHL with most of their players moving to the Buffaloes. Prior to the 1966–67 season, the Buffaloes renamed themselves the Cowboys, as a new Western Canada Junior Hockey League team took over the Buffaloes name. Garry Unger
Garry Douglas Unger (born December 7, 1947) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1967 until 1983. Early life Unger was born on December 7, 1947, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to parents Olive and Jack. His younger sister, Carol Ann, contracted polio as a baby and became permanently disabled. Playing career Unger set an NHL record by playing 914 consecutive games in the regular season between February 24, 1968, and December 21, 1979, doing so with four teams: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Atlanta Flames. Canadian Forces Base Calgary, also CFB Calgary, was a Canadian Forces Base in Calgary, Alberta. Currie Barracks The Canadian Militia opened the Currie Barracks on the southwestern edge of Calgary in 1935, occupying a property on the level plateau above the south slope of the Bow River valley. The facility was named after the recently deceased General Sir Arthur Currie, commander of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the Western Front during World War I.
