The Virginiatown Bank Robbery was a 1972 robbery of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Virginiatown, Ontario, Canada. December 21, 1972, two French-speaking armed robbers charged into the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Virginiatown and demanded to be provided with the bank's cash. One staff member was on the phone at the moment the robbers entered, and relayed the situation to the telephone operator who summoned the police. The robbers were armed with a pistol and a machine gun. The robbery was timed to coincide with the bank holding the money for that Friday's Kerr-Addison Mine salary payments. Staff provided the robbers with approximately $60,000 in cash. Havelock Bank Robbery
The Havelock Bank Robbery was a 1961 armed robbery of bank bonds plus $230,000 cash from the Toronto-Dominion Bank branch in Havelock, Ontario. The five robbers were arrested; one died in custody and the other four were found guilty. The money was never found. Background 31 August 1961 was the pay day of three local mining companies, and therefore a day in which the Havelock branch of Toronto-Dominion Bank would have more money than usual. McGarry, Ontario
McGarry is an incorporated township in Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It includes the communities of Virginiatown, North Virginiatown, and Kearns. The township borders with Quebec to the east, along Highway 66 between Kirkland Lake and Rouyn-Noranda. The northern border of the township forms part of the border between Timiskaming District and Cochrane District. Highway 66 was rerouted in 2017 because of concerns that aging mine shafts under the road could cause it to collapse. J.T. Kearns (after whom one of the communities was named) staked a claim in 1907, which became the Chesterville Gold Mines (1938–1952).
