Virginia Tillery Round Barn
The Virginia Tillery Round Barn is a round barn located on County Route 738 west of White Hall in Greene County, Illinois. The barn was built in the fall of 1912 for farmer Harry C. Price. With a diameter, the barn is relatively small for an Illinois round barn; the median diameter of Illinois round barns was . Its size suggests that it served as a general-purpose barn, not a dairy barn like the state's larger round barns. Brown tile blocks were used to build the barn, which is topped by a wood shingle roof with a cupola. Hay was taken in through the door above the barn's north entrance. The barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1982. White Hall, Illinois
White Hall is a city in Greene County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,520 at the 2010 census. History A post office called White Hall has been in operation since 1827. In 1830 a David Barrow was the first person to built and in location that would become White Hall. Two years later he bought another 80 acres of land at the price of $200 for the purpose of creating the town. Four years later, in 1836 White Hall was official established. This area was the home to a long, white tavern owned by James Allen, which was the only hotel between Carrollton, Illinois and Jacksonville, Illinois. The town got its name from the fact that when a stage was approaching the tavern, the driver would call out "Next stop, the White Hall." White Hall became known for pottery as ceramics was historically one of the town's top industries. Between 1825 and 1948 White Hall had 39 commercial potteries. The submission consists of 18 Illinois round barns located throughout the state. The list had major additions in 1982 and 1984. In 1983, 1992 and 2003 one property was added to the submission and in 1994 a historic district at the University of Illinois, including three round barns, was added to the submission and the National Register of Historic Places. The highest concentration of round barns on the submission occurs in Stephenson County. Five Stephenson County round barns were added to the National Register on February 23, 1984. Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the 2020 United States Census, it has a population of 11,843. Its county seat is Carrollton. A notable archaeological area, the Koster Site, has produced evidence of more than 7,000 years of human habitation.
