The following is a list of former primary state highways completely or mostly within the Richmond District (VDOT District 4) of the U.S. state of Virginia. SR 33 Alternate State Route 33 Alternate was a loop off US 33 near Glen Allen, following Old Courtney Road, Courtney Road, and Mountain Road (including Old Mountain Road, cut by I-295). It was added to the state highway system in 1928 and 1930 as part of SR 420, which became SR 4 in the 1933 renumberingVirginia Department of HighwaysNumbers and Descriptions of Routes in State Highway Primary System July 1, 1933 and US 33 in 1937. Huguenot Road
State Route 147 (SR 147) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from U.S. Route 60 (US 60) in Midlothian east to US 60 in Richmond. In various places, it is known as Huguenot Road, River Road, Cary Street Road and Main Street. SR 147 connects Midlothian with the West End of Richmond via the Huguenot Memorial Bridge across the James River. Within Richmond, the state highway follows Cary Street, a major thoroughfare that connects the city's two major universities, the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, with Downtown Richmond. Old Gun Road
Bellona Arsenal was a 19th-century United States Army post in Chesterfield County, Virginia, above the fall line of the James River west of Richmond, Virginia. Ruins of a powder magazine and other buildings are still standing. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History U.S. attorney-general William Wirt and U.S. Army Major John Clarke established the Bellona Foundry on the south shore of the James River, 14 miles west of Richmond, Virginia, in 1810. The Foundry manufactured weaponry for the War Department. The name "Bellona" comes from the name of an ancient Roman goddess of war. Maj. Clarke arranged for the location of a federal arsenal immediately to the west of Bellona Foundry. The Army erected Bellona Arsenal in 1816. It began storing cannon from the Foundry in 1817. State Route 49 (SR 49) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from the North Carolina state line in Virgilina, Virginia in Halifax County, where the highway continues south as North Carolina Highway 49 (NC 49), north to U.S. Route 360 (US 360) near Burkeville in Nottoway County. SR 49 passes through Southside Virginia, connecting Virgilina and Burkeville with Clarksville and Chase City in Mecklenburg County, Victoria in Lunenburg County, and Crewe in Nottoway County. Maidens, VA
Maidens (or Maiden's Adventure) is a small unincorporated community in Goochland County, Virginia, United States. Sited on the north side of the James River, it is currently located at the junction of U.S. Route 522, State Route 6, and State Route 634. History Maiden's Adventure was located along the James River and Kanawha Canal which opened in 1840. The new canal was part of a planned link between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean via the James River and the Kanawha River, which would lead to the Ohio River, the Mississippi River, and the Gulf of Mexico. The canal was used by packet and freight boats which replaced the earlier shallow-draft batteau boats used before the canal for commerce. U.S. Route 522 (US 522) is a spur route of US 22 in the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The U.S. Highway travels in a north-south direction, and runs from US 60 near Powhatan, Virginia, to its northern terminus at US 11 and US 15 near Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
