Virgin Islands (album)
''Virgin Islands'' is an album by the German andean new age band Cusco. It was released originally in 1983 and is currently available from the Prudence label under the title ''Virgin Island''. This album contains three tracks which later appeared on the 1990 release Water Stories on Higher Octave Music (''Sun of Jamaica'', ''Seychelles'' and ''Java''). The album also contains a track called ''Alcatraz'', but the music is completely different from the track of the same name on Desert Island and Water Stories, and is actually the original mix of the track ''Bermudas'' on the following Island Cruise album. Many discographies show this as a 1984 release, but early LP pressings verify the 1983 release year. Cusco (band)
Cusco was a German cross-cultural new-age music band named after the Peruvian city of Cusco, which was once the capital of the Inca Empire. The band's music contains influences from music around the world, with an emphasis on South American flute sounds and melodies. Cusco's melodic and energetic music is a fusion of modern and ethnic styles with influences from classical music and rock music sensibilities. Most of the ethnic instruments were keyboard-generated. The band was led by founders Michael Holm (Lothar Bernhard Walter; 1943–) and Kristian Schultze (1945–2011). Michael Holm, already a successful vocal artist, sought to make a musical tribute to ancient cultures. Musical Keyboard
A musical keyboard is the set of adjacent depressible levers or keys on a musical instrument. Keyboards typically contain keys for playing the twelve notes of the Western musical scale, with a combination of larger, longer keys and smaller, shorter keys that repeats at the interval of an octave. Michael Holm
Michael Holm (born Lothar Walter; on 29 July 1943) is a German singer, musician, songwriter and record producer. He is primarily known as a singer of Schlager music. Although his first appearance in the hit parade was in 1962 ("Lauter Schöne Worte"), he had his first big hit in 1969. "Mendocino", the German adaptation of a song by the Sir Douglas Quintet, was the biggest selling single that year in (Germany). The record was released in September 1969, reached number three for five weeks, selling over a million copies. Ariola presented him with a gold record in October 1970. Further hits such as "Barfuß im Regen" (1970), "Tränen lügen nicht" (literally, "Tears Don't Lie", recorded in English as " When A Child Is Born") (1974) and " Musst Du jetzt gerade gehen, Lucille" (1977) followed. Guitar
The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that typically has six strings. Bass Guitar
The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and typically four to six strings or courses. Since the mid-1950s, the bass guitar has largely replaced the double bass in popular music. The four-string bass is usually tuned the same as the double bass, which corresponds to pitches one octave lower than the four lowest-pitched strings of a guitar (typically E, A, D, and G). Kristian Schultze
Kristian Schultze (21 January 1945 – 22 November 2011) was one-half of the German new-age band Cusco. Schultze partnered with Michael Holm and the two produced numerous new-age albums. The two met in late 1970s, when they discovered that they shared a similar interest in pre-colonial America. Schultze also released a number of solo albums. Biography Kristian Schultze was the son of Norbert Schultze, the composer of " Lili Marleen", and Iwa Wanja, a Bulgarian actress and singer. He grew up in Hamburg, Rio de Janeiro and Berlin, and got his musical education at Konservatorium and Musikhochschule Berlin, Wiener Akademie and Jazzschool Graz. He moved to Munich in 1968 where he worked as composer, arranger, producer and musician for various artists, for movies, television and theater. Sun Of Jamaica
"Sun of Jamaica" is a song performed by German group Goombay Dance Band, written by Ekkehard Stein and Wolfgang Jass. The song was released at the end of 1979, and subsequently included on their debut album, '' Sun of Jamaica''. The lyrics recount the narrator's desire to visit Jamaica after seeing ''Mutiny on the Bounty'' as a boy. He explicitly mentions Marlon Brando in the lyrics, thus referring to the 1962 film version. When he visits, he falls in love with a woman, and vows to later return to be with her. The song was highly successful across Europe, reaching number 1 in no less than five countries. Andean new-age music is a fusion genre of new-age music with Peruvian flute and/or Paraguayan harp music. The Peruvian roots stem from the Inca (Inka) influence circa 1200–1532 CE.
