New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American country rock band. The group emerged from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969 and its original lineup included several members of the Grateful Dead. The pedal steel guitar is a console steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings, enabling more varied and complex music to be played than with other steel guitar designs. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrati—characteristics it shares with the human voice. Pedal steel is most commonly associated with country music and Hawaiian music. Herb Greene (April 3, 1942 – March 3, 2025) was an American photographer known for his portraits of musicians and bands from San Francisco's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his images were published by ''Rolling Stone'', by record labels, and in books. Greene's photographed subjects include the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, The Pointer Sisters, Carlos Santana, and Sly Stone. Early life and education Born April 3, 1942, in Indio in Riverside County, California, Greene grew up on his father's pear orchard in Medford, Oregon. Spencer Charles Dryden (April 7, 1938 – January 11, 2005) was an American musician best known as the drummer for Jefferson Airplane and New Riders of the Purple Sage. David Edwin Torbert (June 7, 1948 – December 7, 1982) was a Bay Area musician, best known for his associations with the Grateful Dead and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. He played bass for the latter group, replacing Phil Lesh during the sessions for their first album. He also played on " Box of Rain", a song from '' American Beauty'', and on "Greatest Story Ever Told" from Bob Weir's solo album ''Ace''. "Honky Tonk Women" is a song by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. John Collins Dawson IV (June 16, 1945 – July 21, 2009), nicknamed "Marmaduke", was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was best known as the leader and co-founder of the country rock band the New Riders of the Purple Sage. He sang lead vocals on most of the band's songs. Musical career Dawson was born in Chicago. His family moved to California in 1952. The son of a Los Altos Hills, California, filmmaker, he took guitar lessons from a teacher and friend from the Peninsula School in Menlo Park, California. ''Three from the Vault'' is a live album by the Grateful Dead. It contains the complete show recorded on February 19, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. It was released on June 26, 2007. The album was mastered from the 16-track concert soundboard tapes. Although the album was released in 2007, longtime Grateful Dead engineer Dan Healy actually mixed the album in 1993, and its release was delayed 14 years for unknown reasons. The Capitol Theatre show The February 19, 1971 Port Chester concert marked the beginning of Mickey Hart's temporary departure from the band. The previous night's show would be his last with the Grateful Dead until his return on October 20, 1974.
