Vin Doherty
Vincent Joseph Anthony Doherty (26 March 1911 – 22 November 1982) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood, Hawthorn and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football competition in Australia operated by the Australian Football League (AFL) as a second-tier, regional, semi-professional competition. It includes teams from clubs based in east ... (VFL). Doherty, a small half forward flanker, started his career at Collingwood in 1934 and shared his league debut with future club great Phonse Kyne. As part of a very strong Collingwood side, Doherty participated in five successive VFL Grand Finals from 1935 to 1939, winning the first two. He performed well in the premiership years, kicking 30 goals in 1935 and 33 goals in 1936. Avenel is a town in the Shire of Strathbogie, Victoria, Australia. At the , Avenel had a population of 1,112, up from 1048 at the , 728 at the and 552 at the . History The Post Office opened on 2 June 1858. It is frequently stated as having been named for a village in Gloucestershire by Henry Kent Hughes. The name "Avenel" also appears in Sir Walter Scott's '' Tales from Benedictine Sources'': ''The Monastery'' (1820) and '' The Abbot'' (1820) as the name of a castle and family, that own it. Hughes settled there in 1838, laid out the future town, and named the Hughes Creek, which flows through it. The Avenel Court of Petty Sessions closed on 25 March 1969, with the former courthouse subsequently being used by local community groups. Jack Regan
John Vincent Regan (12 September 1912 – 11 August 1988) was an Australian rules footballer who represented Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1930s and 1940s. Playing career Recruited from Northcote, Regan struggled in his first few seasons and was tried in a variety of positions before he established himself at full-back. Taking on and matching full-forwards like South Melbourne's Bob Pratt (whom Regan regarded as his most difficult opponent), Carlton's Harry Vallence, Richmond's Jack Titus and St Kilda's Bill Mohr, Regan earned his title as the "Prince of Full-backs". He was a magnificent mark and a superb kick. Archival footage shows him using the now defunct drop kick for his kick-ins. In slow motion they demonstrate his perfect balance and timing. Phonse Kyne
Alphonsus Edward "Phonse" Kyne (29 October 1915 – 8 April 1985) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached Collingwood in the Victorian Football League. He is an inductee of the Australian Football Hall of Fame and a member of the official Collingwood Team of the Century. Along with Allan La Fontaine, he is widely regarded as one of the two best footballers to graduate from St Kevin's College, Toorak. Playing career A centre half-forward and ruckman during his playing career, Kyne was a member of Collingwood premiership sides in 1935 and 1936. He won his first best and fairest in 1946, winning the award again the following two seasons to become the first player to win the Copeland Trophy three years in succession.
