Vilshana, Cherkasy Oblast
Vilshana () is a rural settlement in Zvenyhorodka Raion, Cherkasy Oblast, central Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Vilshana settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: History Archeological excavations have demonstrated that the area of Vilshana was inhabited over 5,000 years ago. By around the second-to-fifth century CE, it was inhabited by Slavs. It became part of the Kievan Rus', near its southern border. Vilshana is first mentioned in written sources in 1598 as the town ( mistechko) of ''Olshana''. From 1923 to 1931, Vilshana served as the administrative center of . As a result of the Holodomor, a manmade famine in Soviet Ukraine in 1932–1933, 82 people are confirmed to have died in Vilshana. In 1935, Vilshana again became the administrative center of the re-established Vilshana Raion. During World War II, Vilshana was occupied by Nazi Germany between 28 July 1941 and 5 February 1944. Vilshana (Ukrainian: Вільшана) is a village in Kupiansk Raion, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. It has a population of 1,500 people. The village has been occupied by Russian troops since February 24, 2022. Geography The Vilshana River flows into the Oskil River, which is west of the locality. Tavilzhanka is north of the settlement. The elevation is 108 meters. History The village was founded in 1699. In the 20s of the XIX century, in official documents, the settlement was called Novovilshana, and later Vilshana. The village suffered as a result of the Holodomor famine of the Ukrainian people carried out by the government of the USSR in 1932–1933, which some have described as a genocide, the number of identified victims in the surrounding area was 113 people. Vilshana, Sumy Oblast
Vilshana () is a village in Romny Raion, in the central Sumy Oblast of Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of Vilshana rural hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Its population is 1,895 (). History Vilshana was first mentioned in 1609. At the time, it was known as Olshannaia (). At various points, the village has also been known as Olshana () and Vilshanka (). According to popular local legend, the name is descended from the word "" (), meaning "respect for freedom", and was founded by Cossacks. Another local legend says that it was named for the . Vilshana was occupied by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in January 1918. Afterwards, the Lenin kolkhoz was established in the village, focusing on beef and milk production. During World War II a partisan movement briefly existed within the village from September to December 1941, led by A. K.
