Villeta River
Villeta is a city of Paraguay in the Central Department, on the banks of Paraguay River. It is an important industrial center and port. Toponymy The city was founded on March 5, 1714, by Juan Gregorio Bazán de Pedraza, with the original name of San Felipe de Borbón del Valle del Bastán (Saint Philip of Bourbon of the Valley of Bastán), in homage to the King Felipe II. It was later renamed Villeta because of its resemblance to a great Villa. Villeta's Port The port is administered by the National Administration for Navigation and Ports (ANNP), and is specially equipped for the handling of heavy machinery. Many different kinds of merchandise are traded through this port. In Villeta, there's also the Caacupé-mí Port, one of the most important private ports in Paraguay. Paraguayan War
The Paraguayan War (, , ), also known as the War of the Triple Alliance (, , ), was a South American war that lasted from 1864 to 1870. It was fought between Paraguay and the Triple Alliance of Argentina, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay. It was the deadliest and bloodiest inter-state war in Latin American history. Paraguay sustained large casualties, but even the approximate numbers are disputed. Paraguay was forced to cede disputed territory to Argentina and Brazil. The war began in late 1864, as a result of a conflict between Paraguay and Brazil caused by the Uruguayan War. Argentina and Uruguay entered the war against Paraguay in 1865, and it then became known as the "War of the Triple Alliance". After Paraguay was defeated in conventional warfare, it conducted a drawn-out guerrilla resistance, a strategy that resulted in the further destruction of the Paraguayan military and the civilian population. Pilar, Paraguay
Pilar () is the capital city of the Paraguayan Departments of Paraguay, department of Ñeembucú, located along the Paraguay River in the southwestern part of the country. Located about from Asunción, Pilar serves as an important center of commerce and government for the far southwestern region of the country. Etymology Pilar was founded by order of the governor-intendant Pedro Melo de Portugal on October 12, 1779 by settlers from Asunción with the name of Villa del Ñeembucú. Four years later it was called Villa del Pilar, a name owed to the Spanish people, Spanish priest Marcial Antonio Uliambre, originally from Zaragoza, where the Our Lady of the Pillar, Virgin of Pillar is venerated. Josef Mengele
Josef Mengele (; 16 March 19117 February 1979) was a Nazi German (SS) officer and physician during World War II at the Russian front and then at Auschwitz during the Holocaust, often dubbed the "Angel of Death" (). Isabel Arrúa Vallejos
Isabel Arrúa Vallejo or Vallejos (1913/1914-2006) was a Paraguayan teacher, diplomat and feminist. She was Paraguay's first woman with diplomatic rank, as attaché of the Embassy of Paraguay to Brazil from 1945 to 1948. Life Isabel Arrua Vallejos was born in Villeta. (Some sources give her year of birth as 1913, and others give it as 1914.) She became a teacher, and also worked as a nurse on the front line in the 1932-35 Chaco War. In 1942 she entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also worked at the Embassy of Paraguay in Washington, D.C., from 1949 to 1950. Susy Delgado
Susy Delgado (born 20 December 1949) is a Paraguayan poet and writer in Spanish and Guarani language, Guarani. Life Delgado was born in San Lorenzo (Paraguay), San Lorenzo in Paraguay in 1949. After obtaining a degree in Sociology in Madrid, Delgado worked as a journalist. She won international recognition in 1985 as a finalist for a Spanish poetry competition in Madrid. In 2017, she won Paraguay's National Prize for Literature (Paraguay), National Prize for Literature, for her poem ''Ybytu yma''. Her Spanish poetry includes: ''Some lost tremor'' (1986), ''The Court of the Elves''. The latter took the Curupayty Radio Award in 1991 and the Municipal Board Award in 1992. Rubén Bareiro Saguier (January 22, 1930 – March 25, 2014) was a Paraguayan writer, poet and diplomat. Early life Rubén Bareiro Saguier was born and grew up in Villeta, Paraguay.
