The Cathedral of the Lord () Also Villahermosa Cathedral or Tabasco Cathedral Is the main Catholic cathedral of the city of Villahermosa, in Mexico, and the central church of the Diocese of Tabasco. The first church built in its present location dates back to 1776 known as the Church of the Lord of Esquipulas, named after because it was built in honor of the Lord of Esquipulas, a black Christ brought from the population of Esquipulas, Guatemala and that on March 18, 1774, was donated by the Bishop of Yucatán Don Diego de Peredo. On April 16, 1884, Bishop Agustín de Jesus Torres Hernández placed the first stone of the new Cathedral of Tabasco, however, it was not possible to finish its construction, so the Cathedral of Esquipulas continued to be the Cathedral of Tabasco until 1928 when it was closed due to the anti-religious campaign undertaken by then-state governor Tomás Garrido Canabal, which ordered the closure of churches and destruction of religious images throughout the s ... Villahermosa ( , ; "Beautiful Town") is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Tabasco, and serves as the Municipalities of Mexico, municipal seat (governing county) of the state. Located in Southeast Mexico, Villahermosa is an important city because of its cultural history, natural resources, commercial development, and modern industrialization. Esquipulas (Nahuatl: Isquitzuchil, "place where flowers abound"), officially Municipality of Esquipulas, whose original name was Yzquipulas, is a town, with a population of 18,667 (2018 census), and a municipality located in the department of Chiquimula, in eastern Guatemala. Tomás Garrido Canabal
Tomás Garrido Canabal (September 20, 1891 – April 8, 1943) was a Mexican politician, revolutionary and atheist activist. Garrido Canabal served as governor of the state of Tabasco from 1920 to 1924 and from 1931 to 1934. He was noted for his anti-Catholicism; during his term, he led persecutions against the Church in his state, killing many priests and laymen and driving the remainder underground. Biography Tomás Garrido Canabal was born in the hacienda of Playas de Catazajá, in the northernmost part of the Mexican state of Chiapas. During the Mexican Revolution, he was drawn into politics.
