Villa Clara (baseball Team)
The Azucareros de Villa Clara (Villa Clara Sugarmakers) is a baseball club that plays in the Cuban National Series. Based in Santa Clara, the Naranjas have been one of the league's most successful Cuban squads over the last 30 years; winning championships in 1983, as well as three-year run from 1993 to 1995. They also lost the 1996, 2003, 2004 and 2010 finals to the Industriales. Orange, white and black are their colors; although they have three different colors, the orange is what represents them, even though teams like Sancti Spíritus Gallos also wore orange uniforms. Eight Villa Clara's players have been members of the Cuba national baseball team in the World Baseball Classic. The Cuba national baseball team () represents Cuba at regional and international levels. The team is generally made up of players from the domestic Cuban national baseball system, though it has at times included professional players who defected to the United States. Cuba has been described as a baseball powerhouse and currently ranks 8th in World Baseball Softball Confederation's world rankings. Elefantes de Cienfuegos (English: Cienfuegos Elephants) is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Based in the southern city of Cienfuegos, the Elefantes had their best season in their second year of existence, finishing fourth in the National Series. Ciego De Ávila (baseball)
Ciego de Ávila () is a city in the central part of Cuba and the capital of Ciego de Ávila Province. The capital city has a population of about 156,322 and the province 430,507. Geography Ciego de Ávila lies on the Carretera Central highway and on a major railroad. Its port, Júcaro, lies south-southwest on the coast of the Gulf of Ana Maria of the Caribbean Sea, in the adjacent municipality of Venezuela. The city is located about east of Havana and west of the city of Camagüey. The 2009 World Baseball Classic (WBC) was an International Baseball Federation, international baseball competition. It began on March 5 and finished March 23. Unlike in 2006 World Baseball Classic, 2006, when the Round-robin tournament, round-robin format of the first two rounds led to some eliminations being decided by Goal difference, run-difference tiebreakers, the first two rounds of the 2009 edition were double-elimination, modified double-elimination format. Yolexis Ulacia Carrazana (born 1978) is a Cuban baseball relief pitcher. Career After nine seasons in the Cuban leagues (through the 2007-2008 campaign), he had gone 50-38 with 68 saves and a 3.24 earned run average (ERA) in 334 games for Villa Clara. Ulacia was the winning pitcher in the Cuban Serie Nacional All-Star Game in both 2003 and 2004. In the winter of 2003-04, he led all pitchers with 45 games pitched. He led again in that department with 42 appearances in 2004-05 and 39 in 2006-2007. After 26 games in 2008-2009, he had 17 saves and made the Cuban roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Leonys Martín Tápanes (born March 6, 1988), nicknamed "Ikadi", is a Cuban-American professional baseball center fielder for the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Mexican League. He signed with the Texas Rangers (baseball), Texas Rangers in 2011, and made his MLB debut later that season. Eduardo Paret Pérez (born October 23, 1972, in Santa Clara) is a Cuban baseball player. He is a shortstop for Villa Clara of the Cuban National Series, and for the Cuban national baseball team. Paret was the starting shortstop on the Cuban teams that won gold medals at the 1996 and 2004 Summer Olympics and second place at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He was named most valuable player of the 2005 World Cup of Baseball after going 12 for 19 with 8 stolen bases in the tournament. In July 1997, Paret and his Villa Clara teammates Osmani García and Angel López spoke with Cuban defector Rolando Arrojo by telephone.
