Vikingarännet
is a long distance ice skating race and tour skating event between Uppsala and Stockholm in Sweden. The race length is about 80km. There is also a shorter 50km event called ('The Viking Tour'). Name The event is named after the Viking Age (ca. 1000 CE) because it follows historical water transportation routes on Lake Mälaren which have been used since then. History The first race was in 1999, when about 4000 skaters participated. The event had to be cancelled in 2000 and 2002 due to poor ice conditions on the planned race date, and again in 2008 due to nearly complete absence of ice all through the winter along the planned route. Beginning in 2003, the race date is only set a few weeks beforehand, depending on short term predictions of ice conditions. Egbert Rolf "Erben" Wennemars (born 1 November 1975) is a Dutch former speed skater. He specialized in the sprint and middle distances of 500, 1000 and 1500 meters, and set six world records during his career. Speed skating career Wennemars was the first skater who skated the 1500 m faster than 1:50.00. His 1:49.89 in the summer of 1997, however, was not regarded as an official world record. During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, where Wennemars was qualified for the 500, 1000 and 1500 m, he dislocated his shoulder when Grunde Njøs from Norway fell and collided with Wennemars during the second 500 m race. Jan Maarten Heideman (born 16 June 1973) is a Dutch speed skater who specialises in marathon speed skating. Heideman, currently living in a small town named Gelselaar in the Achterhoek, started as an all-around speed skater, finishing in 8th position three times at the Dutch All-around Speed Skating Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996.
