Viken (Old Norse: Vík or Víkin), or Vika, was the historical name during the Viking Age and the High Middle Ages for an area of Scandinavia that originally surrounded the Oslofjord and included the coast of Bohuslän. Its definition changed over time, and from the Middle Ages, Viken included only Bohuslän. During the Viking Age, Viken was defined as the strait running between Norway and the northwest coast of Sweden and the Jutland peninsula of Denmark. It is located in what is now southeastern Norway and the northwestern Swedish province of Bohuslän. During the Viking Age, Viken was the northernmost Danish province. Control over Viken shifted between Danish and Norwegian kings in the Middle Ages, and Denmark continued to claim Viken until 1241. Viken was a short-lived county in Norway that existed from 1 January 2020 to 1 January 2024. Its name was derived from the historical region in present-day Norway and Sweden. The county was located in Eastern Norway when it was established on 1 January 2020 by the merger of Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold with the addition of the municipalities of Jevnaker, Lunner and the former Svelvik Municipality. Both its creation and its name—described as unhistorical by historians—were controversial from the onset, the merger was resisted by all the three counties and the new county had an approval rating of about 20% in the region. Viken has been compared to gerrymandering. The newly constructed coat of arms of Viken lacked a historical basis and was described by experts as an amateurish logo that did not adhere to the rules of heraldry, and as "three flying saucers under a cap." Viken, Sweden
Viken is situated in Höganäs Municipality in Skåne County, Sweden with 4,227 inhabitants in 2010. It has a surface area of 224 hectares. 223 of these are in the Höganäs municipality. Well known for its harbour, the village has a long history of seafaring and fishing. It is also known for the distinctive, mostly yellow, seaside cabins lining its vast public beach. Viken is known to have been the home of billionaire Carl-Eric Björkegren, who disappeared without a trace in 1994. Theories vary in terms of what happened. In 2005, he was declared dead by the Stockholm District Court. Rune Andréasson, the creator of the Swedish people, Swedish comic character Bamse, lived and died in Viken.
