Vietnamese Football League System
The Vietnamese football league system contains two professional leagues, a semi-professional league and an amateur league for Vietnamese football clubs. System by period Current system Cup eligibility Domestic cups All V.League 1 and V.League 2 sides qualify for the Vietnamese Cup tournament. Super Cup The Super Cup is the first game of the season, played between the previous years' winners of the V.League 1 and Vietnamese Cup. If the same team wins both tournaments, then the team finishing second in the previous years' V.League 1 take on the V.League 1 winners. Continental competition For the 2021 season, one Vietnamese side, the team finishing top of V.League 1, qualifies automatically for the AFC Champions League Group Stage. The team finishing second in the V.League 1, and the winner of the Vietnamese Cup qualify for the AFC Cup Group Stage. Vietnamese Super League
The V.League 1 ( vi, Giải bóng đá vô địch quốc gia, lit=National Football League), also called Night Wolf V.League 1 due to sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football league in Vietnam, controlled by the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company. It is contested by 14 clubs who play each other on a home and away basis. The team finishing at the top at the end of the season is crowned the champion and enters the AFC Champions League. The league was founded in 1980 as the All Vietnam Football Championship, with Tổng Cục Đường Sắt emerging as the first winner. The league turned professional in the 2000–01 season, which allowed clubs to hire foreign players. Vietnamese National Football Super Cup ( vi, Siêu cúp bóng đá Việt Nam), also called the Thaco National Football Super Cup due to sponsorship reasons, is Vietnamese football's annual match contested between the champions of the previous V.League 1 season and the holders of the Vietnamese Cup. If the V.League 1 champions also won the Vietnamese Cup, then the league runners-up provide the opposition. AFC Cup
The AFC Cup is an annual continental club football competition organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Under its current rules, the competition is played primarily between clubs from nations that did not receive direct qualifying slots in the top-tier AFC Champions League, based on the AFC Club Competitions Ranking. Al-Kuwait SC and Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya are the most successful clubs in the competition's history, having won three titles each. Clubs from Kuwait have won four titles, making them the most successful nation in the competition. Ever since the inauguration of the competition in 2004, the finalists of each edition have been dominated by clubs from West Asia except for 2011 and 2015 when Uzbekistani team FC Nasaf from Central Asia and Malaysian team Johor Darul Ta'zim from Southeast Asia became champions that respective year. AFC Champions League
The AFC Champions League (abbreviated as ACL) is an annual continental club football competition organised by the Asian Football Confederation, and contested by Asia's top-division football clubs. It is the most prestigious club competition in Asian football, played by the national league champions (and, for some nations, one or more runners-up) of their national associations. Introduced in 1967 as the Asian Champion Club Tournament, the competition rebranded and took on its current name in 2002 as a result of the merger between the Asian Club Championship, the Asian Cup Winners' Cup and the Asian Super Cup. Vietnamese National Football Cup ( vi, Giải Bóng đá Cúp Quốc Gia Việt Nam), now officially recognized as the BaF Meat National Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a Vietnamese football competition. It is one of the most important club competitions in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Cup was first held in 1992. Cảng Sài Gòn was the first cup winners. Format Entry is open to all teams that compete in the V.League 1 (Champions League) and the V.League 2 (First League). The two teams that reach the final are exempt from the preliminary rounds of next year's competition. The cup winners qualify for the AFC Cup (relative equivalent of the UEFA Europa League). Vietnamese National Cup winner will be also qualified for a single match of the Vietnamese Super Cup against the V.League 1 champion. V.League 2 has 12 teams competing in this season. Format Initially the V.League 2 comprised 14 clubs. Starting in the 2022 season, only 12 teams will participate in the V.League 2.
