Vielsalm (; ) is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality of Wallonia located in the Luxembourg (Belgium), province of Luxembourg, Belgium. The town is part of the Arrondissement of Bastogne. It is the place of origin of the Salm (state), House of Salm. On 1 January 2018 the municipality had 7,821 inhabitants. The total area is 139.76 km2, giving a population density of 56 inhabitants per km2. Etymology The village, like Salmchâteau, takes its name from the Salm (Amblève), River Salm. The region is also called the Val de Salm, and Salm region. The word "Salm" comes from the Celtic ''salwa'', meaning ''black'' or ''blurred''. Vielsalm means literally "Old Salm" because, at some point, the Lord moved his castle which became the new town centre. A different popular etymology says Salm and Vielsalm are taken from the German ''Salm'', meaning ''salmon''. Salm is the name of several historic countships and principalities in present Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. History Origins and first division The County of Salm arose in the tenth century in Vielsalm, in the Ardennes region of present Belgium. It was ruled by a junior branch of the House of Ardenne–Luxembourg, called the House of Salm. In 1165, it was divided into the counties of Lower Salm, in the Ardennes, situated in Belgium and Luxembourg, and the county of Upper Salm, situated in the Vosges mountains, present France. The Baraque de Fraiture is the highest point in the province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium. Situated in the Municipality of Vielsalm, it is high. It has a ski area comprising 3 pistes (350, 700 and 1,000 metres long), which normally open for less than 20 days a year. However, it has been open for up to 60 days per year recently. Bruyères
Bruyères () is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France. The town built up around a castle built on a hill in the locality in the 6th century.
