Pierre De Vieille-Brioude
Pierre de Vieille-Brioude (c. 1200 – after 1242, Margat Castle), or Vieille-Bride, was a nobleman from Auvergne who was the eighteenth Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller between 1240 and 1242, succeeding Bertrand de Comps. He was succeeded by Guillaume de Chateauneuf. Career The first mention of Pierre de Vieille-Brioude as brother dates from February 1216. He became Grand Commander (''Grand Précepteur de l'Hospital'') between 18 July 1237 and April 1239. He succeeded Bertrand de Comps as Grand Master of the Order between the end of 1239 and 1240. Battle of Gaza In 1239, during the Barons' Crusade, de Vieille-Brioude accompanied Theobald I of Navarre who left France with 1,000 to 1,500 French knights for the Holy Land. He had had his hand forced by his traveling companions against the advice of de Vieille-Brioude, representing the Hospitaller and the Knights Templar and Teutonic Knights, to march on Gaza to fight the sultan of Damascus, al-Salih Ismail. Pont De Vieille-Brioude
Pont de Vieille-Brioude (Vieille-Brioude Bridge) is located in France, crossing the river Allier. It is a masonry arch bridge with a span of that was built in 1832. The predecessor of this bridge on the same site was probably built in 1479 and had a span of , making it the longest existing arch span for some three hundred years. The bridge was ordered by local resident Lady de Dombes and built by Grenier and Estone similar to how Pont Grand (Tournon-sur-Rhône) was later built. The completion of the bridge was delayed for years because of some controversy. The bridge was too narrow, and its approaches were too steep to be used by carts. It collapsed on March 27, 1822, at 6 am. Before any stone bridge had been built on this site, there was a wooden bridge. Brioude (; Auvergnat: ''Briude'') is a commune in the Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-central France. It lies on the banks of the river Allier, a tributary of the Loire. History At Brioude, the ancient ''Brivas'', its martyrs in the 4th century, Julien and Ferréol, became its patron saints; according to the Chronicle of Moissac, Euric of Toulouse had the basilica built, in the fourteenth year of his reign (c. 480): it was wondrously decorated with columns.
