Via Alpina
The Via Alpina is a network of five long-distance hiking trails across the Alps, alpine regions of Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Monaco. The longest of trails is the red trail, whose termini are in Trieste and Monaco. The Via Alpina was created by a group of public and private organisations from the 8 Alpine countries in 2000, receiving EU funding from 2001 until 2008. It was initiated by the Association Grande Traversée des Alpes in Grenoble, which hosted the Via Alpina international secretariat until January 2014, when it was transferred to the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps CIPRA (Liechtenstein). There are national secretariats (hosted by public administrations or hiking associations) in each country. Its aim is to support sustainable development in remote mountain areas and promote the Alpine cultures and cultural exchanges. Lavamünd () is a market town in the district of Wolfsberg (district), Wolfsberg in the Austrian state of Carinthia (state), Carinthia. Bleiburg
Bleiburg () is a small town in the south Austrian state of Carinthia (''Koroška''), south-east of Klagenfurt, in the district of Völkermarkt, some four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the border with Slovenia. Zgornje Jezersko
Zgornje Jezersko (, literally 'Upper Jezersko'; ) is a settlement and administrative centre of the Municipality of Jezersko in northern Slovenia. It is part of the traditional Slovenian Carinthia region and the Upper Carniola Statistical Region. Tržič
Tržič (; ) is a List of cities and towns in Slovenia, town in northern Slovenia, close to the Austrian border. It is the seat of the Municipality of Tržič. Geography The town is located within the historic Upper Carniola region on the Tržič Bistrica River, a left tributary of the Sava. In the north, a road leads up to the Loibl Pass in the Karawanks mountain range, the border with the Austrian state of Carinthia (state), Carinthia. History A first settlement named ''Forum in Lubelino'' was founded along the Roman road that ran from the ancient city of Emona (in present-day Ljubljana) via Loibl Pass to Virunum and the Zollfeld plain in the Noricum province (present-day Carinthia). After a massive landslide caused by an earthquake, the original settlement was destroyed, and many people moved down the valley to establish a new village named ''Neumarktl'' in German, where Tržič is now located.
