Vertov
Dziga Vertov (russian: Дзига Вертов, born David Abelevich Kaufman, russian: Дави́д А́белевич Ка́уфман, and also known as Denis Kaufman; – 12 February 1954) was a Soviet pioneer documentary film and newsreel director, as well as a cinema theorist. His filming practices and theories influenced the cinéma vérité style of documentary movie-making and the Dziga Vertov Group, a radical film-making cooperative which was active from 1968 to 1972. He was a member of the Kinoks collective, with Elizaveta Svilova and Mikhail Kaufman. In the 2012 ''Sight & Sound'' poll, critics voted Vertov's ''Man with a Movie Camera'' (1929) the eighth-greatest film ever made. Vertov's younger brothers Boris Kaufman and Mikhail Kaufman were also noted filmmakers, as was his wife, Yelizaveta Svilova. Kino-Eye (film)
Kino-Eye (Anglophonic: Cine-Eye) is a film technique developed in Soviet Russia by Dziga Vertov. It was also the name of the movement and group that was defined by this technique. ''Enthusiasm: The Symphony of Donbas'' (Ukrainian: Ентузіязм: Симфонія Донбасу or Entuziiazm: Symfoniia Donbasu, Russian: Энтузиазм: Симфония Донбасса), also referred to as ''Donbas Symphony'' or ''The Symphony of the Donbas Basin'', is a 1931 sound film directed by Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov. The film's score is considered experimental and avant-garde because of its incorporation of factory, industrial, and other machine sounds; human speech plays only a small role in the film's sounds. ''A Sixth Part of the World'' (russian: Шестая часть мира, ), sometimes referred to as ''The Sixth Part of the World'', is a 1926 silent film directed by Dziga Vertov and produced by Kultkino (part of Sovkino). Through the travelogue format, it depicted the multitude of Soviet peoples in remote areas of USSR and detailed the entirety of the wealth of the Soviet land. Focusing on cultural and economic diversity, the film is in fact a call for unification in order to build a "complete socialist society". A mix between newsreel and found footage, Vertov edited sequences filmed by eight teams of kinoks (''kinoki'') during their trips. According to Vertov, the film anticipates the coming of sound films by using a constant "''word-radio-theme''" in the intertitles. Dziga Vertov Group
The Dziga Vertov Group (french: Groupe Dziga Vertov) was formed around 1969 by politically active filmmakers including Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin. Their films are defined primarily for Brechtian forms, Marxist ideology, and a lack of personal authorship. History The roots of the project began with Godard's increased collaboration with other politically-motivated filmmakers, such as the group project ''Cinetracts'', the incomplete 1968 film ''One A.M.'' shot with D.A. A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record". Yelizaveta Ignatevna Svilova (russian: Елизаве́та Игна́тьевна Сви́лова, rendered in Latin as Elizaveta Svilova) (5 September 1900, Moscow – 11 November 1975, Moscow) was a Russian filmmaker and film editor. Kinoks
The Kinoks (russian: Киноки, kino-oki, cinema-eyes) were a collective of Soviet filmmakers in the 1920s, consisting of Dziga Vertov, Elizaveta Svilova and Mikhail Kaufman. According to Annette Michelson, Georges Sadoul states the collective was founded in 1922 by Svilova, Vertov and Kaufman, and the painter Belyaev was a fourth member. However, in 1923 Svilova wrote an open letter to the journal LEF applying for admission to the Council of Three. Scholars have interpreted this as a publicity stunt "to provide exposure of their work and to raise awareness of their commitment to documentary cinema" rather than an actual application, since Svilova had already been working with Vertov and Kaufman for several years. Mikhail Abelovich Kaufman (russian: Михаи́л А́белевич Ка́уфман; 1897 – March 11, 1980) was a Russian cinematographer and photographer. Boris Abelevich Kaufman, A.S.C. (russian: Бори́с А́белевич Ка́уфман; August 24, 1906 – June 24, 1980) was a Russian-born American cinematographer and the younger brother of Soviet filmmakers Dziga Vertov and Mikhail Kaufman. Life and career Kaufman was born into a family of Jewish intellectuals in Białystok when Congress Poland was part of the Russian Empire.
