Verrallia Aucta
''Verrallia aucta'' is a species of fly in the family Pipunculidae. It is found in the Palearctic.Coe, R.L. (1966) Pipunculidae.''Handbook for the Identification of British Insects'', Vol. X (Part 2c): 1-83; Royal Entomological Society Londonpdf/ref> Hosts Parasitoid on '' Philaenus spumarius''. Because ''P. s.'' is the most common vector (in Europe) of the invasive agricultural disease '' Xylella fastidiosa'', ''V. aucta'' is of great interest as a biological control. Insecticide application can produce paradoxical target rebound by hitting ''V. aucta'' as well as the intended ''P. spumarius''. This is also a problem for tillage, but only specifically in April, due to the particularities of the ''V. aucta'' lifecycle. Although not terribly common anywhere, across all of Northern Italy it was most common in the Piedmont Piedmont ( ; ; ) is one of the 20 regions of Italy, located in the northwest Italy, Northwest of the country. It borders the Liguria region to the south, ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Diptera Of Asia
Flies are insects of the order Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek δι- ''di-'' "two", and πτερόν ''pteron'' "wing". Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings having evolved into advanced mechanosensory organs known as halteres, which act as high-speed sensors of rotational movement and allow dipterans to perform advanced aerobatics. Diptera is a large order containing more than 150,000 species including horse-flies, crane flies, hoverflies, mosquitoes and others. Flies have a mobile head, with a pair of large compound eyes, and mouthparts designed for piercing and sucking (mosquitoes, black flies and robber flies), or for lapping and sucking in the other groups. Their wing arrangement gives them great manoeuvrability in flight, and claws and pads on their feet enable them to cling to smooth surfaces. Flies undergo complete metamorphosis; the eggs are often laid on the larval food-source and the larvae, which lack true ... Brachycera Genera
The Brachycera are a suborder of the order Diptera. It is a major suborder consisting of around 120 families. Their most distinguishing characteristic is reduced antenna segmentation. Description A summary of the main physical characteristics is: * Antenna size (with eight or fewer flagellomeres) is reduced. In many species the third segment, the flagellum, is fused, except from a bristle called the arista that is sticking out from the fused flagellum. The arista consist of no more than three segments called aristomeres. * The maxillary palp (an elongated appendage near the mouth) has two segments or fewer. * The back portions of the larval head capsule extend into the prothorax (the anterior part of the thorax, which bears the first pair of legs). * Two distinct parts make up of the larval mandible (lower jaw). * The epandrium and hypandrium of the genitalia are separated in males. * No premandible is present on the lower surface of the labrum (the roof of the mout ... James Edward Collin
James Edward Collin (16 March 1876, Kirtling – 16 September 1968) was an English entomologist who specialised in Diptera. He was the author of ''Empididae''. ''British Flies'', Volume 6. University Press, Cambridge (1961). This was the third volume in an uncompleted series begun by his uncle George Henry Verrall. Collin wrote extensively on Diptera of most families of Diptera (excepting those in Nematocera). The specimens collected by Collin and his uncle Verrall are in the Hope Entomological Collections at the University of Oxford. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History's website provides a searchable database of the new species they described. He was a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society The Royal Entomological Society is a learned society devoted to the study of insects. Josef Mik
Josef Mik, also Joseph Mik (23 March 1839 in Zábřeh – 13 October 1900 in Vienna) was a Bohemian entomologist mainly interested in Diptera. He described many new species and made contributions to knowledge of the Diptera of Central Europe. Mik was the first dipterist to clarify the chaetotaxy of the legs. " On the legs I distinguish a front haeta and a hind-side; an upper- and an under-side. When we imagine the leg stretched out horizontally and perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the body, the front-side is that which is turned towards the head, and the hind-sidethat turned towards the end of the body; the upper- and under-side, in such a case, are self-understood."Mik, J. 1878 Dipterologische Untersuchungen Jahresber K.K. Akad. Gymnasium Vienna Mik was born in Zábřeh, Moravia. From 1871 to 1889 he was teacher at the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna. In 1889 he was given the Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph; he died in Vienna. Works * 1866 Beitrag zur Dip ...
