Veronica Hazelhoff
Veronica Hazelhoff (22 February 1947 – 1 July 2009) was a Dutch author of children's literature. Career Hazelhoff made her debut in 1981 with the book ''Nou moe!'' She won the Gouden Ezelsoor award as well as the Zilveren Griffel award for this book. Hazelhoff's first three books, ''Nou moe!'' (1981), ''Hierzo!'' (1982) and ''Auww!'' (1983), feature the same character, a young girl called Maartje. Hazelhoff received an award for two out of these three books as Hazelhoff won the Gouden Griffel award in 1984 for the book ''Auww!'' Many of Hazelhoff's later books would also feature female protagonists. She went on to win the Zilveren Griffel award two more times: in 1995 for the book ''Veren'' en in 2007 for her book ''Bezoek van Mister P.'' Hazelhoff based her book ''Bezoek van Mister P.'' on her own experience with rheumatism from which she suffered herself for most her life. Groenekan
Groenekan is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of De Bilt, and lies about 3 km west of Bilthoven. History It was first mentioned in 1607 as De Groene Kan, and is a reference to an inn with a green pot as display. Groenekan was a road village in a peat excavation area to the east of the Vecht. In 1840, it was home to 237 people. In 1863, Groenekan was cut in two by the Utrecht-Hilversum railway line. Two railway stations were built, but closed in 1922 and 1938. Between 1867 and 1870, two forts were built near Groenekan as part of the New Dutch Waterline: Fort Voordorp and Fort Ruigenhoek. Between 1914 and 1918, and 1939 and 1940, bunkers were constructed around the village. Sylvia Weve
Sylvia Weve (born 28 May 1954) is a Dutch illustrator. Weve has illustrated over 150 books and she has received numerous awards for her work, including the Gouden Penseel, the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs and the Max Velthuijs-prijs. Career In 1983, Weve made her debut as children's book illustrator by illustrating the book ''Een noom op school'' written by Corrie Hafkamp. Early in her career, Weve illustrated many books by Rindert Kromhout. Weve went on to illustrate many books by numerous authors including Karel Eykman, Veronica Hazelhoff, Ted van Lieshout, Bies van Ede and Edward van de Vendel. In 2006, she published ''Kip en ei'', a book which she both wrote and illustrated herself. Later in her career she started collaborating with Bette Westera and they both won various awards for their work, including the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs in 2015. Gouden Griffel
The Gouden Griffel (Golden Stylus) is an award given to authors of children's or teenagers' literature in the Netherlands. History Since 1971, it is awarded each year during the Dutch Children's Books Week, by the Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (Dutch Book Promotion Society) for the best children's books written in the past year. Between 1954 and 1970, one book per year was declared the "children's book of the year". Since then, ''griffels'' are awarded in several categories. Only novels written in Dutch are eligible for the ''gouden griffel''. However, the runner-up awards (Silver ''griffels'') can also be given to translated works. Aside from these, the ''Gouden Penseel'' (golden paintbrush) is awarded to the best illustrated children's books (with silver ''penseel'' as a runner-up), and since 1997 the Gouden Zoen (golden kiss, with silver as a runner-up) is awarded to the best books for teenagers.
