Vernon C. Smith
Vernon Corbett Smith (June 28, 1892 – January 27, 1963) was an American politician from Virginia. He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1938 to 1948 and from 1950 to 1961. Early life Vernon Corbett Smith was born on June 28, 1892, in Grundy, Virginia. He attended Grundy Senior High School. Career Smith was a Democrat. He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 9th district, from 1938 to 1948 and from 1950 to 1961. He was defeated for re-election by Samuel J. Breeding. He helped establish Breaks Interstate Park and served on its commission. Perrow Commission
The Commission on Education, known as the Perrow Commission after its chairman, Virginia state senator Mosby Perrow Jr., was a 40-member commission established by Governor of Virginia J. Lindsay Almond on February 5, 1959 after the Virginia Supreme Court in Harrison v. Day and a three-judge federal court in James v. Almond had both struck down significant portions of the Stanley Plan, which had implemented Massive Resistance to the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Brown v. Board of Education issued on May 17, 1954 and May 31, 1955. Four legislators (some from the Virginia Senate, others from the House of Delegates) were appointed from each of the ten U.S. Congressional districts in Virginia. Compared to the Gray Commission that Governor Thomas B. Breaks Interstate Park
Breaks Interstate Park is a bi-state state park located partly in southeastern Kentucky and mostly in southwestern Virginia, in the Jefferson National Forest, at the northeastern terminus of Pine Mountain. Rather than their respective state park systems, it is instead administered by an interstate compact between the states of Virginia and Kentucky. It is one of several interstate parks in the United States, but only one of two operated jointly under a compact rather than as two separate state park units. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Kentucky Department of Parks are still major partner organizations, however. The Breaks is also referred as the "Grand Canyon of the South", through which the Russell Fork river and Clinchfield Railroad (now the CSX Transportation Kingsport Subdivision) run. Grundy Senior High School
Grundy High School is a public high school located east of Grundy, Virginia on Slate Creek in Buchanan County, Virginia. It is part of the Buchanan County Public Schools system. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's A Black Diamond District in 2A West Conference 39. Grundy is a National Blue Ribbon School. Following the closing of Grundy Junior High at the end of the 1994-1995 school year, the High School's name was changed from Grundy Senior High School to Grundy High School.
