Vernon Arnold Haugland
Vernon Arnold Haugland (May 27, 1908 – September 15, 1984) was an American reporter and writer for the Associated Press. As a war correspondent, he experienced and documented World War II events in person. During an assignment to New Guinea, he was a passenger in a bomber that ran out of fuel. He had to parachute out at 13,000 feet. Landing safely, he then spent 43 days in the jungle living off the land. He nearly starved to death, but for his heroism, General Douglas MacArthur awarded him the Silver Star medal. He was the first civilian to receive the medal. Vernal G. Riffe Jr. (June 26, 1925 – July 31, 1997) was an American politician and member of the Democratic Party. Riffe served in the Ohio House of Representatives for 36 years, from 1959 to 1995, and served as speaker for 19 years, from 1975 to 1994. Life and political career Vern Riffe's father, Vernal G. Lavern "Vern" Pyles, Jr. (May 17, 1919 – June 20, 2013) was a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Born in Washington, D.C., he worked as a cable slicer for AT&T and then went to Clemson University where he received his degree in civil engineering. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and then served in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps. Vern Sheridan Poythress (born 1946) is an American philosopher, theologian, New Testament scholar and mathematician, who is currently the New Testament chair of the ESV Oversight Committee. He is also the Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Biblical Interpretation, and Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary and editor of Westminster Theological Journal. Vern Edward Paxson is a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. He also leads the Networking and Security Group at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley, California. His interests range from transport protocols to intrusion detection and worms. Vern Miller (December 22, 1928 – June 11, 2021) was an American attorney, politician, and law enforcement officer who served as the Kansas attorney general from 1971 to 1975. Arild Verner Agerskov Mikkelsen (October 21, 1928 – November 21, 2013) was an American professional basketball player. One of the National Basketball Association's first power forwards in the 1950s, he was known for his tenacious defense and durability, playing 699 out of a possible 704 games during his career.
