Vereniging Natuurmonumenten
Vereniging tot Behoud van Natuurmonumenten in Nederland (), also known as Vereniging Natuurmonumenten, is a Dutch nature conservation organization founded in 1905 by Jacobus Pieter Thijsse and Eli Heimans, that buys, protects, and manages nature reserves in the Netherlands. It is a member of the European Environmental Bureau. The first area that the organization purchased in 1905 was to protect the Naardermeer, southeast of Amsterdam. It had 355 sites under its management in 2010, with a total area of . The largest is De Wieden (); the smallest is Fort Ellewoutsdijk (). The organization also owns 1,700 buildings, of which 250 were provincial or national monuments. In 2013, the organization had 735,000 members and was headquartered in 's-Graveland. Jacobus Pieter Thijsse
Jacobus Pieter Thijsse (25 July 1865 – 8 January 1945) was a Dutch conservationist and botanist. He founded the Natuurmonumenten, Society for Preservation of Nature Monuments in the Netherlands. Along with Eli Heimans and Johannes Bernardus Bernink, Johannes Bernink, he was active in a period of revival of biological education known as ''biologisch reveil.'' Thijsse was the son of infantry sergeant Jacobus Thijsse and Catharina Johanna Priester. He grew up in Maastricht, Grave and Woerden. In 1877 the father retired from the army and the family moved to Wagenaarstraat in Amsterdam where Thijsse went to the Municipal School. Here he was taught by Coenraad Kerbert who took him on walks in the parks. In 1883 he qualified as a teacher of modern languages and taught in primary schools in Amsterdam. Eli Heimans
Eli Heimans (28 February 1861 – 22 July 1914) was a Dutch nature educator and conservationist. Along with Jacobus Thijsse he popularized outdoors nature education through his writings. Heimans was born in Zwolle to a Jewish family of textile dying businessman Jacob Israel Heimans and Elisabeth Valk. He went to the local schools and trained as a mathematics teacher . In 1882 he began to teach in Amsterdam and here he met Jan Ligthart Jan Ligthart (11 January 1859 - 16 February 1916) was a Dutch teacher and philosopher. He became known for his innovative educational methods and the modernisation of the Dutch education system. He wrote many articles and books about education .... Nature conservation is the ethic/moral philosophy and conservation movement focused on protecting species from extinction, maintaining and restoring habitats, enhancing ecosystem services, and protecting biological diversity. A range of values underlie conservation, which can be guided by biocentrism, anthropocentrism, ecocentrism, and sentientism, environmental ideologies that inform ecocultural practices and identities. The Gouden Ganzenveer ("Golden goose quill") is a Dutch cultural award initiated in 1955, given annually to a person or organization of great significance to the written and printed word. 's-Graveland
s-Graveland () is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Wijdemeren, and lies about 4 km northwest of Hilversum. The former municipality of 's-Graveland merged with Loosdrecht and Nederhorst den Berg on 1 January 2002 to form the new municipality Wijdemeren. The village was first mentioned in 1634 as "de akkers in 's Graevenlandt" and means "the land of Count of Holland" ( Albrecht van Beieren) and served as a hunting ground.
