Verdun Dragons
The Verdun Dragons were a hockey team based in Verdun, Quebec. The team was part of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey. The Dragons played at the Verdun Auditorium. They won the Futura Cup against the Saint-Georges Garaga in 2003–2004. Initially the team was based in Haut-Richelieu, Quebec, taking the name Dragons. This lasted from the 1996–97 season. The next season, they moved to Iberville, Quebec. Verdun ( , , ) is a Montreal borough, borough (''arrondissement'') of the city of Montreal, Quebec, located in the southeastern part of the island. Long known as a working class neighbourhood, it has experienced significant gentrification and social change in the 21st century. Etymology The borough's name is a shortening of Saverdun, in France, the hometown of its early settler Zacharie Dupuy. The Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH, ''"North American Hockey League"'') is a semi-Professional sports league organization, professional ice hockey league based in the Canadian province of Quebec. Teams in the LNAH compete for the Vertdure Cup. History The league was founded as the Quebec Semi-Pro Hockey League (QSPHL; French: ''Ligue de hockey semi-professionnelle du Québec'' (''LHSPQ'')) in 1996, and became fully professional and assumed its current name in 2004. It reached its peak in terms of number of teams that season, with ten. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019-20 playoffs were suspended and never concluded; Thetford Assurancia was the regular season champion. Verdun Auditorium
Verdun Auditorium (Canadian French, French: ''Auditorium de Verdun'') is an arena located in the borough of Verdun, Quebec, Verdun, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The building opened on November 28, 1939 and holds 4,114 seats. It is the largest arena in the west end of Montreal, the complex is also home to Arena Denis Savard, a small minor-hockey rink, attached to its side. The Auditorium has hosted various Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) teams, including the Verdun Juniors, Verdun Éperviers, and Verdun Collège Français. In 1993, it hosted the Montreal Dragons for their lone season in the short-lived National Basketball League (Canada), National Basketball League. The team is part of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH), and plays at the Centre Sportif Lacroix-Dutil. History The team was founded in 1996-97 as the Rive-Sud Jackals in the former Quebec Semi-Pro Hockey League (QSPHL). The Jackals became the Saint-Georges Garaga in 1998–99, when relocating to Saint-Georges, Quebec. The Garaga dominated Canadian senior hockey in the early 2000s, winning the 2002 Allan Cup and the 2004 Allan Cup. In 2005, the team was purchased by businessman Jean-Paul Blais, who also owns the CRS Express trucking company, and renamed the team Saint-Georges CRS Express. Blais sold the team to investors in 2010, and the team was renamed after a local radio station, CKRB-FM. Iberville, Quebec
Iberville () was a city in the Montérégie region of the Canadian province of Quebec on the east side of the Richelieu River, across from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. It was about 30 miles (50 km) from Montreal, and about the same distance from the United States border at the head of Lake Champlain. In 2002, Iberville merged with neighbouring Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, along with several other neighbouring towns and villages. The population of Iberville in 2006 was 9,989, up 6% from the 2001 census.
