Verbow
Verbow was an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago and active between the mid-1990s and early 2000s. The band's sound was distinguished by emotionally direct songwriting and their unconventional use of cello. History Early period: Jason & Alison The band grew out of a collaboration between Jason Narducy and Alison Chesley. They billed themselves as Jason & Alison, with Narducy singing and playing acoustic guitar while Chesley played cello. In describing their musical approach, Narducy said, "We basically took two wooden instruments and presented them in a very loud wall-of-sound way." In 1994, the duo released the album ''Woodshed'' on the independent Whitehouse Records label. Over the next year, they were profiled in Billboard Magazine, and opened for nationally known artists such as Bob Mould (of Sugar and Hüsker Dü) and Live. White Out (album)
''White Out'' is the second and final studio album by the American band Verbow, released in 2000. The band broke up two years later. The album's first single was "New History". Verbow supported the album by touring with Counting Crows. Production The album was produced primarily by Brad Wood. It was recorded over five weeks in northwestern Indiana, in a house along Lake Michigan; the title refers to weather conditions that trapped the band in the studio. The band's sound focused on Jason Narducy's guitar work and, especially, Alison Chesley's cello playing. Lennie Dietsch played bass on some tracks. Several songs touch on themes of renewal and change. Helen Money
Alison Chesley (born January 4, 1960), known also by her stage name Helen Money, is a Chicago-based cellist and composer. Chesley was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University, where she received a master's degree in cello performance in 1994, studying with Hans Jorgen Jensen. While at Northwestern, Chesley met Jason Narducy. They performed as an acoustic rock duo called Jason & Alison (renamed Verbow), and went on to release two albums for Epic Records: ''Chronicles'', produced by Bob Mould, and ''White Out'', produced by Brad Wood. Opening for such bands as Frank Black, Bob Mould, Counting Crows, Live, Morrissey, Liz Phair and Brad with Stone Gossard, Verbow toured nationally for seven years. Jason Narducy
Jason V. Narducy is an Americans, American musician from Evanston, Illinois, United States. After receiving his first guitar at the age of nine Narducy started his music career, playing guitar and writing songs for his punk rock band, Verboten. Verboten is credited as inspiring Dave Grohl to pursue music, and Narducy is featured in the Foo Fighters HBO documentary ''Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, Sonic Highways''. After college, he formed an acoustic duo with cellist Alison Chesley called Jason & Alison. They released the full-length album ''Woodshed'' in 1994. Jason & Alison became a four-piece rock band called Verbow in 1996, adding drums and bass. Robert Arthur Mould (born October 16, 1960) is an American musician, principally known for his work as guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar (American band), Sugar in the 1990s. Early years Born in Malone (town), New York, Malone, New York State, New York, Mould lived in several places, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, where he attended Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Saint Paul. Superchunk
Superchunk is an American indie rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, consisting of singer-guitarist Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Laura King. Formed in 1989, they were one of the bands that helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s. The band is known for its energetic, high-velocity style and strong do-it-yourself ethic. Brad Wood is an American record producer and sound engineer based in Los Angeles. He has produced many albums, including Liz Phair's ''Exile in Guyville'' and Placebo (band), Placebo's Placebo (Placebo album), self-titled debut. Hüsker Dü () was an American punk rock band formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1979. The band's continuous members were guitarist/vocalist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton, and drummer/vocalist Grant Hart. They first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, and later crossed over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the band's principal songwriters, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternating songs. The band issued their debut studio album ''Everything Falls Apart'' on Reflex Records in 1983 and subsequently released three LPs and an EP on the independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed ''Zen Arcade'' in 1984. Sunny Day Real Estate is an American emo band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1992. Its moniker is a pseudonym for sole member Michael Benjamin Lerner, who single-handedly writes and performs the majority of the outfit's material. Telekinesis is signed to Merge Records.
