Vera Thomas
Vera Sybil Thomas (née Dace; 3 December 1921 – 9 July 1995) was an English international table tennis and tennis player. Table tennis career She won seven medals at the World Table Tennis Championships including three gold medals; two in the team events and one as a member of the winning doubles team in the 1948 World Table Tennis Championships with Peggy Franks. She also won three English Open titles. Tennis career As a tennis player she competed in 15 editions of the Wimbledon Championships between 1946 and 1961. Her best result in the singles was reaching the fourth round in 1948 in which she lost to Nelly Landry. Personal life She married Arthur Thomas in 1947 and became Vera Thomas-Dace. The World Table Tennis Championships are table tennis competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The World Championships have been held since 1926, biennially since 1957. Five individual events, which include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's double and mixed doubles, are currently held in odd numbered years. The World Team Table Tennis Championships, which include men's team and women's team events, were first their own competition in 2000. The Team Championships are held in even numbered years. In the earlier days of the tournament, Hungary's men's team was a dominant force, winning the championships 12 times. This was followed by a short period of dominance by Japan in the 1950s. Nelly Landry
Nelly Adamson Landry (28 December 1916 – 22 February 2010) was a tennis player from Belgium who became a French citizen after marriage. She was the 1948 women's singles champion at the French Open, French Championships where she was seeded third, beating Shirley Fry in a three-set final. She had been a finalist in 1938, losing to Simonne Mathieu, and reached again the final in 1949, losing to Margaret Osborne duPont. In 1936 and from 1946 until 1948 she won the singles title at the French Covered Court Championships in Paris. She won the singles title at the Alexandria International Championships, International Championships of Egypt, played in Alexandria, in 1948 and 1949. In the latter year she also won the Championships of Egypt at the Gezira Sporting Club in Cairo, defeating Annalisa Bossi in the final.
