Venturing Leadership Skills Course
Venturing is a core program of Scouting America for coeducational teenagers and young adults ages 14 (or 13 and graduated the eighth grade) through 20. It is one of Scouting America's three programs for older youth, the others being Sea Scouts and Exploring. The purpose of Venturing is to provide a positive environment where youth members, called Venturers, can experience adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service. The program got its start in the 1930s as the "Senior Scout" Division for boys 15 and older. In 1949 the Senior Scout Division became the Explorer Division. Scouting America is the largest scouting organization and one of the largest List of youth organizations, youth organizations in the United States, with over 1 million youth, including nearly 200,000 female participants. Founded as the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, about 130 million Americans have participated in its programs, which are served by 465,000 adult volunteers. The organization became a founding member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922. National Youth Leadership Training
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is the current youth leadership training offered by Scouting America. It is conducted at the Council (Scouting America), council level for members of the Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scouts (Scouting America), Sea Scout programs, which are open to youth of all genders. NYLT is part of the national organization's Leadership training (Boy Scouts of America), leadership training program and is similar to Wood Badge, Woodbadge, which is Scouting America’s program for adult leadership training. Mount Hope, West Virginia
Mount Hope is a city in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,125 at the 2020 census. History Early settlers came to Mount Hope to begin mining coal. Coal miners in Mount Hope continued to thrive for about 250 years, but ending due to the rise of mining in the Mid-west and closing entirely during the depression. Prior to the arrival of Europeans in Mount Hope, the land was used primarily by Native Americans for centuries until William Blake, Sr. became the first white settler in the area. During this time Blake built a Hotel, The Old Blake Inn, in order to house travelers and coal miners on their way through Mount Hope. Powder Horn (Boy Scouts Of America)
Powder Horn was a skills resource course for Venturing (Boy Scouts of America), Venturing and Scouts BSA leaders and youth (age 14 and up) of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Powder Horn is also described as a "hands-on resource management course" designed to give Scouting leaders "the contacts and tools necessary to conduct an awesome high-adventure program" in their Scouting unit. The goals of Powder Horn were to help Scout leaders safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature, provide an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead youth through a program of high adventure, and familiarize participants with the skills involved in different high adventure disciplines. Kodiak (Boy Scouts Of America)
Kodiak is the second level leadership development course for Venturers in the Boy Scouts of America's Venturing program. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews is recommended but not required. Kodiak is the second course in the overall Venturing youth leadership development program called ''Nature of Leadership''. When it was first being developed, Kodiak was being offered as ''Nature of Leadership Treks''. This training is one of several programs available within the youth leadership training program. Participants must complete unit-level training, National Youth Leadership Training or a special ''bridge course'' that has not yet been defined. Council Service Territories (CSTs) are the administrative regions of Scouting America. Previously, the term “region” was used until June 2021, when the organization moved to “National Service Territories”. The transition from four regions to sixteen National Service Territories was made as an effort to reduce staff plus save costs. At the territory level, there is minimal staff and no board or committee structure. In 2024, NSTs were renamed to Council Service Territories and several CST boundaries were updated. Youth Protection Program (Boy Scouts Of America)
Leadership training in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) includes training on how to administer the Scouting program, outdoor skills training for adults and youth, and leadership development courses for adults and youth. Some of these courses like Youth Protection Training are mandatory. Most of the courses are offered by the local council, while a few are hosted at the national level, currently at Philmont Training Center in New Mexico. Wood Badge (Boy Scouts Of America)
Wood Badge in the United States is an advanced leadership training course available to adult leaders of Scouting America. The first Wood Badge course was presented in England by the founder of Scouting, Baden-Powell, and he introduced the program into the United States during a visit in 1936. The first course was held at the Mortimer L. Schiff Scout Reservation, but Americans did not fully adopt Wood Badge until 1948. The National Council of Scouting America provided direct leadership to the program through 1958, when the increased demand encouraged them to permit local councils to deliver the training. The program originally focused almost exclusively on Scoutcraft skills, some elements of the Patrol Method, and First Class Scout requirements. The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, often shortened to Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) or The Summit, is a High Adventure bases of Scouting America, High Adventure base owned by Scouting America and located in Fayette County, West Virginia, Fayette and Raleigh County, West Virginia, Raleigh counties, near Beckley, West Virginia. It comprises the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base, James C. Justice National Scout Camp, and John D. Tickle National Training and Leadership Center.
