Venture (department Store)
Venture was a chain of Discount store, discount Department store, department stores that operated in Australia between 1970 and 1994. Unrelated to the defunct North American chain of the same name (see Venture Stores), Venture is best remembered as a retailer of medium quality women's and children's clothing as well as soft homewares. The Hobart outlet was also notable for having an in-store restaurant called Charlie's. Venture experienced financial difficulties in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was placed in liquidation in April 1994, with all stores closing soon after. History The first Venture store opened in Geelong in 1970, followed by Ballarat, with additional stores opening across Melbourne over the next two years. Alan Bond (22 April 1938 – 5 June 2015) was an English-born Australian businessman noted for his high-profile and often corrupt business dealings. Waltons was an Australian department store chain, founded by John Walton (1904–1998). History Walton bought a menswear store in 1951, located on George Street, Sydney, opposite the Queen Victoria Building and Sydney Town Hall and near Town Hall railway station, Sydney, Town Hall station. Over the years it was expanded along Park Street, Sydney, Park Street with adjoining properties purchased. Solomon Lew
Solomon Lew (born 22 March 1945) is an Australian businessman. His principal commercial activities involve importing apparel, toys and other goods into Australia from China and investments, mainly in retail companies. As a teenager, Lew supplied dresses to the Myer Emporium in Melbourne using his company Voyager Solo. In 2014 Lew built a ten per cent stake in David Jones after South African retailer Woolworths launched a takeover bid for the department store. Lew was formerly a director then chairman of Coles Myer until voted out by shareholders. He was also involved in an attempt to resurrect Ansett with Lindsay Fox following its collapse in September 2001.
