Ventabren
Ventabren () is a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southern France. Geography The historical village of Ventabren is close to Aix-en-Provence (to the east), away from Coudoux and Velaux to the west. History The village dates back to 920–940 AD, when Guillaume I, Count of Provence, had a castle built there. In 1851 the village comprised 327 houses. Six years later, a railway was built. The 393-metre long Roquefavour Aqueduct (''Aqueduc de Roquefavour''), located on the territory of the commune, was built from 1842 to 1847 to convey water from the Durance to Marseille, as part of the Canal de Marseille. Roquefavour Aqueduct
The Roquefavour Aqueduct () is an aqueduct in the commune of Ventabren, near Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, France. The aqueduct was first planned in 1565, but it was not realized until the 19th century. It was designed by Jean François Mayor de Montricher and built between 1841 and 1847; it is the largest stone aqueduct in the world. It was designated as a ''monument historique'' (national heritage site) in 2002. Location The aqueduct is located near Aix-en-Provence. It can be reached via the D64 road. It crosses the Arc river in Ventabren. History The idea of the aqueduct was first envisaged by Adam de Craponne, an engineer from Salon de Provence, in 1565. After the drought of 1834 and the subsequent cholera epidemics, the idea resurfaced. Canal De Marseille
The Canal de Marseille (; ) is a major source of drinking water for all of Marseille, the largest city in Provence, France. The canal, along its main artery, is long and has additional of minor arteries. Its construction lasted 15 years and was directed by the engineer Franz Mayor de Montricher. The canal became functional on July 8, 1849. The canal was a significant achievement of 19th-century engineering, combining bridges, tunnels and reservoirs over mountainous terrain. Until 1970, it was almost the sole water source for Marseille, and it still provides two-thirds of the city's drinking water. Coudoux
Coudoux (; ) is a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France. Location It is away from Aix-en-Provence, away from Salon-de-Provence, and nearly away from Marseille. As for villages, it is away from Velaux, away from La Fare-les-Oliviers, away from Ventabren and about away from Éguilles. History As early as the 16th century, there were two hamlets, "Petit Coudoux" (Small Coudoux) and "Grand Coudoux" (Big Coudoux). However, these were part of the commune of Ventabren and it was only in 1950 that Coudoux was made a commune in its own right. Velaux (; ) is a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France. It is near Coudoux and Ventabren. Velaux is an old Provençal village set on a hill overlooking the high plains of the inland west side of Aix. It is located in the middle of the Aix-Marseille-Salon region and surrounded by greenery and hills of vines. Velaux is in the countryside while being close to major urban centers in the region. William I Of Provence
William I ( 950 – after 29 August 993), called the Liberator, was Count of Provence from 968 to his abdication. In 975 or 979, he took the title of ''marchio'' or margrave. He is often considered the founder of the county of Provence. He and his elder brother Rotbold I, Count of Provence, Rotbold I were sons of Boson II of Arles and his wife Constance, who, based on her name, has been speculated to be daughter of Charles Constantine of Vienne. They both carried the title of or count concurrently, but it is unknown if they were joint-counts of the whole of Provence or if the region was divided. His brother never bore any other title than count so long as William lived, so the latter seems to have attained a certain supremacy. In 980, he was installed as Count of Arles.
