Philips Telecommunicatie en Informatie Systemen (Philips Computers) was a subsidiary of Philips that designed and manufactured personal computers. Philips Computers was active from 1963 through 1992. Before that, Philips produced three computers between 1953 and 1956, all for internal use, PETER, STEVIN, and PASCAL. Philips Computers was mostly known for its pioneer work in optical devices (through a separate subsidiary: LMSI). Philips computers were also sold under the Magnavox brand in North America. Two instances of Philips Computers products sold under other brands are known to date. Philips computers were coupled with Philips monitors. Philips had far more success selling its monitors than its computers. Philips monitors continue being designed, produced and sold globally contemporaneously. The Intel 80286 (also marketed as the iAPX 286 and often called Intel 286) is a 16-bit microprocessor that was introduced on February 1, 1982. It was the first 8086-based CPU with separate, non-multiplexed address and data buses and also the first with memory management and wide protection abilities. It had a data size of 16 bits, and had an address width of 24 bits, which could address up to 16M of memory with a suitable operating system such as Windows compared to 1M for the 8086. The 80286 used approximately 134,000 transistors in its original nMOS (HMOS) incarnation and, just like the contemporary 80186, it can correctly execute most software written for the earlier Intel 8086 and 8088 processors. The 80286 was employed for the IBM PC/AT, introduced in 1984, and then widely used in most PC/AT compatible computers until the early 1990s. Philips VG-8230
The Philips VG-8230 was a MSX2 standard compatible personal computer released in 1986. It was the first MSX2 machine from Philips, aimed at home users with a focus on gaming and productivity. The VG-8230 was only released in Netherlands. With only 64 KB of RAM, it was quickly replaced by the Philips VG-8235 which offered 128 KB of memory. Description The machine featured a dark case with a built-in keyboard and a 360 KB capacity 3.5-inch floppy disk drive on the right side. The VG-8230 came with MSX BASIC built into the ROM, allowing users to write and execute their own programs. This version of BASIC was extended to take advantage of the improved graphics and memory of the MSX2 standard.
