Henry Lehrman
Henry Lehrman (30 March 1881 – 7 November 1946) was an American actor, screenwriter, director and producer. Lehrman was a very prominent figure of Hollywood's silent film era, working with such cinematic pioneers as D. W. Griffith and Mack Sennett. He directed, as well as co-starred in, Charlie Chaplin's first film, ''Making a Living''. Lehrman was notoriously careless of the safety of the actors who worked for him. He was the fiancé of the actress Virginia Rappe, for whose death Roscoe Arbuckle, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle (whom Lehrman had directed in about a dozen films in the early 1920s), in a highly publicized series of trials, was accused, and later acquitted, of manslaughter. Billie Ritchie
William Hill, known professionally as Billie Ritchie (5 September 1874 – 6 July 1921), was a Scottish people, Scottish comedian who first gained transatlantic fame as a performer for British music hall producer Fred Karno — a full decade before Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin took a similar career path. Ritchie is best recalled today for the silent comedy short film, shorts he made between 1914 and 1920 for producer-director Henry Lehrman's L-KO Motion Picture Company and Fox Film Sunshine Comedy unit. Henry Bergman (February 23, 1868 – October 22, 1946) was an American actor of stage and film, known for his long association with Charlie Chaplin. Biography Born in San Francisco, California, Bergman acted in live theatre, appearing in ''Henrietta'' in 1888 at the Hollis Street Theatre in Boston and in the touring production of '' The Senator'' in 1892 and 1893. He made his Broadway debut in 1899 appearing with Anna Held in ''Papa's Wife'', the musical hit of the year. He made his first film appearance with the L-KO Kompany in 1914 at the age of forty-six. In 1916, Bergman started working with Charlie Chaplin, beginning with ''The Floorwalker''. Silent Film
A silent film is a film without synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of inter- title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era, which existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in larger cities, an orchestra—would play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. The L-KO Motion Picture Company, also known as the L-KO Kompany, was an American motion picture company founded by Henry Lehrman. It produced silent one-, two- and very occasionally three-reel comedy shorts between 1914 and 1919, released by Universal Pictures. The initials L-KO stand for "Lehrman—Knock Out". History By the spring of 1914, Henry "Pathé" Lehrman had directed several important Keystone Cops comedies including '' The Bangville Police'' (1913) and ''Kid Auto Races at Venice'' (1914), Charlie Chaplin's debut. Hank Mann (born David William Lieberman; May 28, 1887 – November 25, 1971) was a Russian-born, American comedian and silent screen star who was a member of the Keystone Cops, and appeared as a supporting player in many of Charlie Chaplin's films. Career Hank Mann was born in the Russian Empire, but emigrated to New York City with his parents and siblings in 1891.
