George Venables-Vernon, 5th Baron Vernon
George John Warren Venables-Vernon, 5th Baron Vernon (22 June 1803 – 31 May 1866), was a British politician. He was one of the last members of parliament for Derbyshire and the first for South Derbyshire. Vernon had a lifetime enthusiasm for Italian literature, particularly Dante after visiting Italy as a child. Vernon county is named after him in Australia. Early life and education Vernon was born at Stapleford Hall in Nottinghamshire, the only son of George Charles Venables-Vernon, 4th Baron Vernon (1779–1835) of Sudbury, Derbyshire, and Frances Maria, only daughter of Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren. Sir Richard Vernon, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1425 to 1426, was an ancestor. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Politics Vernon entered public life in 1831, as Member of Parliament for Derbyshire. George Venables-Vernon, 1st Baron Vernon
George Venables-Vernon, 1st Baron Vernon (9 February 1709 – 2 August 1780), was a British politician. Vernon was the son of Henry Vernon, of Sudbury, Derbyshire, and his wife Anne, daughter and heiress of Thomas Pigott by his wife Mary, sister and heiress of Sir Peter Venables, Baron of Kinderton, Cheshire. His father died in 1719, leaving him Sudbury Hall, and in 1728 he assumed by royal licence the additional surname of Venables after he had succeeded Sir Peter Venables to Kinderton in 1715. He sat as a Member of Parliament for Lichfield from 1731 to 1747 and for Derby from 1754 to 1762. In 1762 he was raised to the peerage as Lord Vernon, Baron of Kinderton, in the County of Chester. He lived at Sudbury Hall, one the country's finest Restoration mansions, which now is a Grade I listed building. Lord Vernon was married three times and several of his descendants gained distinction. George Venables-Vernon, 2nd Baron Vernon
George Venables-Vernon, 2nd Baron Vernon (9 May 1735 – 18 June 1813), was the 2nd Baron Vernon of Kinderton. He acceded to the title in 1780 after the death of his father George Venables-Vernon, first Baron Vernon of Kinderton. Vernon was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, proceeding MA in 1755. He served as a Whig member of parliament for Weobley from 1757 to 1761, Bramber from 1762 to 1768 and Glamorganshire from 1768 to 1780. His first wife was Louisa Barbara Mansel, daughter of Bussy Mansel, last Baron Mansel of Margam. They wed on 16 July 1757 and had two sons and two daughters, who died young. He married again, this time to Jane Georgiana Fauquier, daughter of William Fauquier of Hanover, on 25 May 1786. With her he had two more daughters, one of whom died young.
