Velvet Lined Shell
''Velvet Lined Shell'' is a mini-album by the British singer Toyah Willcox, released in 2003 by her independent label Vertical Species. Background This release consists of six tracks, recorded in Toyah's hometown of Birmingham. Three of the musicians on this album, Anthony Bishop, Tim Elsenburg and Alistair Hamer, are members of the experimental rock band Sweet Billy Pilgrim. The material has a deliberately raw feel to it, and what Willcox described as a "darker direction". The singer named the likes of Nick Cave, Garbage, Mogwai and Marilyn Manson amongst her newer influences. Three tracks on this album had first appeared on the 2002 EP ''Little Tears of Love'', which was sold exclusively via Willcox's website, and strictly limited to 1000 signed copies. Toyah Willcox
Toyah Ann Willcox (born 18 May 1958) is an English musician, actress, and TV presenter. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Willcox has had eight top 40 singles, released over 20 albums, written two books, appeared in over 40 stage plays and 10 feature films, and voiced and presented numerous television shows. Between 1977 and 1983, she fronted the band Toyah, before embarking on a solo career in the mid-1980s. At the 1982 BPI/Brit Awards, Toyah was nominated for British Breakthrough Act, and Best Female Solo Artist. Toyah was nominated a further two times in this category in 1983, and in 1984. Her hit singles include " It's a Mystery", " Thunder in the Mountains" and " I Want to Be Free". Childhood and early life Willcox was born on 18 May 1958 in Kings Heath, Birmingham. Garbage is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. David Singleton (born 1961) is an English record producer, audio engineer, record label director, musician, songwriter, author and Internet entrepreneur. He is best known as the production and business partner of Robert Fripp of King Crimson. Singleton is the co-owner/director (with Fripp) of the Discipline Global Mobile record label, half of the Ton Prob production team (again with Fripp) and the developer of the BootlegTV live concert streaming setup. ''Toyah Solo'' is a compilation box set by British singer Toyah Willcox, consisting of seven CDs and a DVD, released on Edsel Records in 2020. Background The box contains most of Toyah's solo work from 1985 to 2003, featuring the six albums ''Minx'' (1985), ''Desire'' (1987), '' Prostitute'' (1988), '' Ophelia's Shadow'' (1991), ''Take the Leap!'' (1993) and '' Velvet Lined Shell'' (2003) alongside a CD of remixed, revisited and rare tracks and a DVD with promotional music videos and an interview.
