Velachery Junction Flyover
Velachery twin flyovers is a set of two L-shaped flyovers at the Vijayanagar Junction in the neighbourhood of Velachery in Chennai, India. It was constructed at a cost of 1080 million. History and design The plan for the flyovers was first proposed in 2010. The first-level flyover connects the Velachery Bypass Road with the Velachery–Tambaram Road near the Velachery MRTS station. This flyover has 15 spans and lands around 190 meters ahead of the MRTS bridge. The second-level flyover connects the Taramani Link Road and the Velachery Bypass Road. It is 1,200 meters long and has 32 spans. The central span of this flyover is the longest of all, at 40 meters length, right above the Vijayanagar junction. The height of the second flyover is 15 meters. Traffic As of 2010, the junction had a traffic density of 13,000 vehicles daily during peak hours. Velachery (''pronounced as'' veh·luh·cheh·ree) is a commercial and residential area in south Chennai, and is the largest commercial centre in south Chennai. It is surrounded by Guindy in the north, IIT Madras in the north-east, Taramani in the east, Perungudi in the south-east, Pallikaranai wetland, Pallikaranai Wetland in the south, Madipakkam in the south and south-west, Adambakkam in the west and north-west. Velachery (Chennai MRTS)
The Velachery MRTS Station is a ground level station on the Chennai MRTS railway line in Chennai. It is located near the junction of Velachery Main Road and Inner Ring Road in Velachery. The station is built on the northern banks of Pallikaranai wetland. History The station was opened on 19 November 2007. The EMU maintenance shed at the station was opened in 2008. Structure The length of the platform is 280 m. The station premises also consists of 12,250 sq m of open parking area. EMU shed The station has a massive shed for preventive maintenance of electrical multiple unit (EMU) rakes, which is spread over 44 hectares. Before the opening of the shed in 2008, maintenance of the all MRTS rakes were being sent to . However, the shed has been lying in disuse for the past few years. Flyovers In Chennai
Chennai is home to the second largest vehicular population in India, behind New Delhi. The total road network in the city's metropolitan area is 2,780 km. With Chennai's vehicular population having experienced a surge in the late 1990s, several flyovers were built to reduce the traffic congestion in the city.
