Vassar Carlton
Vassar Benjamin Carlton (November 13, 1912 – August 31, 2005) was a justice of the Florida Supreme Court from 1969 to 1974, serving as chief justice for his final year on the Court.Erik Robinson, "Florida Supreme Court Justices: List of Life Dates", Florida Supreme Court Historical Society (June 2010). Born in Alachua County, Florida, Carlton received an LL.B. from Stetson University in 1937, and was elected a Brevard County judge just four years later, in 1941, at 27 years old. He thereafter remained in the judiciary. In 1954, "he was elected Circuit Judge of Florida's old Ninth Circuit" remaining in that office until his election to the Florida Supreme Court in 1968, where he commenced service on January 7, 1969. He was chosen as chief justice for a term beginning January 1, 1973, remaining in that office until his retirement on February 28, 1974. Florida Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of Florida is the state supreme court, highest court in the U.S. state of Florida. It consists of seven justices—one of whom serves as Chief Justice. Six members are chosen from six districts around the state to foster geographic diversity, and one is selected at large. The justices are appointed by the governor of Florida, governor to set terms, which do not exceed six years. Immediately after appointment, the initial term is three years or less because the justices must appear on the ballot in the next general election that occurs more than one year after their appointment. Afterward, they serve six-year terms and remain in office if retained in the general election near the end of each term. Citizens vote on whether or not they want to retain each justice in office. Ben Overton
Benjamin Frederick Overton (December 15, 1926 – December 29, 2012) was a justice of the Supreme Court of Florida. Ben Overton was born December 15, 1926, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He was a judge from the U.S. state of Florida. Overton graduated from the University of Florida with his bachelor's degree in 1951, and from the University of Florida College of Law with his law degree in 1952. He received his master of laws degree from the University of Virginia. He was a city attorney for St. Petersburg, Florida from 1954 to 1957, and he became a circuit judge in 1964. Overton served as a Florida Supreme Court Justice from 1974 to 1999. From 1976 to 1978, he served as the Chief Justice of the Court. Stetson is an American brand of hat manufactured by the John B. Stetson Company. "Stetson" is also used as a generic trademark to refer to any campaign hat, particularly in Scouting. John B. Stetson gained inspiration for his most famous hats when he headed west from his native New Jersey for health reasons. On his return east in 1865, he founded the John B.
