Vasalemma Parish
Vasalemma Parish ( et, Vasalemma vald) was a rural municipality in north-western Estonia. It was a part of Harju County. The municipality had a population of 4,991 (as of 1 January 2012) and covers an area of 38.66 km2. The population density was 129.1 inhabitants per km2. Vasalemma Parish consisted of 3 small boroughs (') ( Vasalemma, Rummu, Ämari) and 2 villages ( Veskiküla and Lemmaru). The mayor (') was Mart Mets. A municipality ( et, omavalitsus, plural ) is the smallest administrative subdivision of Estonia. Each municipality is a unit of self-government with its representative and executive bodies. The municipalities in Estonia cover the entire territory of the country. Murru Prison
Murru Prison ( et, Murru vangla) was an Estonian prison. It was located in Rummu, Harju County. The prison was established in 1938. Until 1970s, at the prison there operated stone industry. Industry's workers were mainly prisoners. In 1961, part of Murru prison was changed to an autonomous prison called Rummu Prison. Rummu Prison existed until 2000. 2011 Harku Prison was merged to Murru Prison (Harku and Murru Prison). 2016 Harku and Murru Prison was merged to Tallinn Prison. Ämari Air Base
Ämari Air Base is a military airbase in Harjumaa, Estonia located south of Lake Klooga and southwest of Tallinn. History Ämari Air Base was built between 1940–1952 under an agreement signed by the Estonian SSR and the Soviet Union. In 1945, the USSR Ministry of Defense established a naval reserve airfield of its Baltic Fleet there, where the amphibious seaplanes of the 69th Long-Range Reconnaissance Regiment Catalina PBY-5A and the escort fighter jets Yak-9P began to be based. It became the main airport of the units located in Ämari in 1952. At Vietnum War Ämari Air Base was a training base of Soviet pilot to fly MiG-15, MiG-15bis, Mig-17 and MiG-19 before deplayment in Vietnum as a advisor pilots and deployment to Arab countries for war against Israel. A spoil tip (also called a boney pile, culm bank, gob pile, waste tip or bing) is a pile built of accumulated ''spoil'' – waste material removed during mining. These waste materials are typically composed of shale, as well as smaller quantities of Carboniferous sandstone and other residues. Spoil tips are not formed of slag, but in some areas, such as England and Wales, they are referred to as slag heaps. In Scotland the word ''bing'' is used. The term "spoil" is also used to refer to material removed when digging a foundation, tunnel, or other large excavation. Rummu Quarry
The Rummu quarry is a submerged limestone quarry located in Rummu, Vasalemma Parish, Estonia, Europe. Much of the natural area of the quarry is under a lake formed by groundwater, and is situated next to a spoil tip. The quarry is close to two former prisons, the nearest being the former Rummu prison. History and geography In the late 1930s, the quarry began to be excavated for open mining of limestone and Vasalemma marble. The latter is a specific kind of limestone with its structure and texture resembling that of marble. During the Soviet era, until the 1990s, excavation was performed as hard labour by Murru and Rummu prisoners, who would excavate and process limestone from the water-drained quarry. When pumping of water ceased, the quarry quickly filled with groundwater, forming a lake, immersing some of the utility buildings and machinery. Next to the lake is the Vasalemma spoil tip (slag heap). Over time, the spoil tip assumed a unique appearance through erosion by water. ...
