Varlin
Willy Leopold Guggenheim, known as Varlin (16 March 1900 – 30 October 1977), was a Swiss painter. His figurative work emphasized the fragility of everyday life. Varlin was friends with Hugo Loetscher and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, and painted them. Life Varlin was born in Zurich with a twin sister, Erna. He grew up on the outskirts of Zurich. When he was twelve years of age, his father and elder sister died within two months of each other. This began a fascination with darkness that would influence his work for the rest of his life. In his early teens Varlin and his remaining family moved to St. Gallen. Here he attended high school, eventually taking a year-and-a-half apprenticeship as a lithographer. This gave him easy access to Bavarian limestone, the same material used by Manet, Daumier, and Gavarni to make prints. Hugo Loetscher
Hugo Loetscher (22 December 1929 – 18 August 2009) was a Swiss writer and essayist. Life Loetscher was born and raised in Zürich. He studied philosophy, sociology, and literature at the University of Zürich and the Sorbonne. At Zürich in 1956 he obtained a doctorate with a work called ''Die politische Philosophie in Frankreich nach 1945' (Political Philosophy in France after 1945"). Afterwards, he was literature reviewer for the newspaper ''Neue Zürcher Zeitung'' and the magazine ''Weltwoche''. From 1958 to 1962 he was a member of the editorial department of the monthly cultural magazine '' Du'' and founded the literary supplement ''Das Wort''. From 1964 until 1969 he was feuilleton editor and member of the editorial board of the ''Weltwoche''. He next became a freelance writer. Bondo, Switzerland
Bondo ( rm, ) is a village and a former municipality in the district of Maloja in the Swiss canton of Grisons. It is now part of the municipality of Bregaglia. Geography The municipality is located near the Swiss–Italian border south of the river Mera in the Val Bregaglia (known as ''Bergell'' in German). It is located in the Bergell sub-district of the Maloja district. The valley floor is so deep that parts of the village do not receive any sunlight in winter. The Val Bondasca leads up from Bondo to Piz Badile and Piz Cengalo, two peaks of the Bregaglia Range. Born in the Russian Empire, today Belarus, he was of Jewish origin. Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. The Kunsthaus Zürich is in terms of area the biggest art museum of Switzerland and houses one of the most important art collections in Switzerland, assembled over the years by the local art association called '. The collection spans from the Middle Ages to contemporary art, with an emphasis on Swiss art. Leo Leuppi (1893–1972) was a Swiss painter, graphic artist, sculptor, and he was a representative of the ''Zürcher Schule der Konkreten''. He was a founder of the avant-garde artists' associations ''Groupe Suisse Abstraction et Surréalisme'' and ''Allianz''. Life Leo Leuppi came from a peasant family with many children. From 1910 to 1914 he attended the class for graphic arts at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich. At the end of the First World War he made contact with the Dada movement and became friends with Jean Arp. In 1934 he founded the ''Groupe Suisse Abstraction et Surréalisme'' to help the modern art movements break through to cultural institutions. Joseph Fernand Henri Léger (; February 4, 1881 – August 17, 1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. In his early works he created a personal form of cubism (known as "tubism") which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style.
