Martuni Region
Martuni Province (, ) was a province of the breakaway Republic of Artsakh, ''de facto'' and ''de jure'' part of the Republic of Azerbaijan. History The territory was formed from the Soviet-era raion of Martuni District within the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. The eastern part of that district is under the control of the Azerbaijan. Martuni Province consists of the branch of the former Oblast which juts out farthest to the east, almost reaches Stepanakert on the west, and goes a little past Karmir Shuka on the south. The western half has many hills and small mountains, full of small villages, while the eastern half is very flat, with fewer villages, and the larger regional center of Martuni. Melikdom Of Varanda
The Melikdom of Varanda was one of the five Armenian melikdoms of the Karabakh region. It encompassed Varanda, a district located in the southeastern part of Karabakh. The ruling ''meliks'' (princes) of the principality belonged to the Shahnazarian family, who not long before their rise to power lived in an area around Lake Sevan, from which they eventually fled. The melikdom was established in 1606, when Melik Shahnazar of Gegham installed his brother at Varanda, which he himself had received as a reward by Shah Abbas I (), the Safavid shah (king) of Iran. Prior to the takeover of the Shahnazarians, Varanda was ruled by another line of meliks, the last ruler of which was Melik Muzaffar. Varanda and the other melikdoms upheld the notion of Armenian statehood, which was used by the Safavids to fight the Ottoman Empire. Fizuli Rayon
Fuzuli District () is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the south-west of the country and belongs to the Karabakh Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Khojavend, Aghjabadi, Beylagan, Jabrayil, and the Ardabil Province of Iran. Its capital is Fuzuli, however since the city is completely ruined following the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, the current '' de facto'' capital is Horadiz until Fuzuli is rebuilt. As of 2020, the district had a nominal population of 133,800. Qaradağlı, Khojavend
Garadaghly () or Varanda () is a village in the Khojavend District of Azerbaijan, in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The village had an Azerbaijani-majority population prior to their expulsion during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. History During the Soviet period, the village was part of the Martuni District of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. In early February 1992, during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, Armenian forces captured the village as well as the villages of Malibeyli and Aghdaban. Their inhabitants were expelled, resulting in the death of at least 99 civilians and 140 injuries. The attack on the village resulted in the deaths of more than 20 people and the injuries of 15 others. Fuzuli (city)
Fuzuli ( ) is a city and the capital of the Fuzuli District of Azerbaijan. The city had a population of 17,090 before its Armenian-occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, occupation by Armenian forces on 23 August 1993, during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, which resulted in the expulsion of the local Azerbaijani population and the city becoming a ghost town. However people are slowly starting to return. On 17 October 2020, Azerbaijani forces recaptured the city during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. History Archaeological excavations on the hill in the northern edge of the town, Garakopaktapa, uncovered artifacts from the 4th-3rd centuries BC, matching similar artifacts found throughout the Armenian highlands.
