Vaniya Chettiars
The Vaniyar, also known as Vaniya Chettiar and Vaniya Nair, are upper middle caste ethnic groups residing in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Vaniya Nairs are matrilineal and have customs similar to other Nair castes while Vaniya Chettiyars are patrilineal and have customs similar to other Chettiyars and tamil castes.Vaniyar are a mercantile community who are Traditionally engaged in the oil trade, producing and selling oil extracted using chekku (traditional wooden oil presses) and use the title Chettiar. Etymology Chettiar/Chetty is derived from the Sanskrit word (Devanagari: श्रेष्ठ) or (Devanagari: श्रेष्ठीन्), meaning superior. This term was later Prakritised as (Devanagari: सेठी), and eventually became (Devanagari: शेट) or (Devanagari: शेटी) in modern Indo-Aryan dialects. Chakkala Nair
Chakkala Nair, also known as Vattakkat Nair, and Vaniya Nair is one of the intermediate subcastes of the Nair community. They are distributed throughout Kerala. In Travancore, they are known as Chakkala, while in Cochin and Malabar they are Vattakattu and In the extreme north of Malabar they are called Vaniyar. The Chakkala Nairs traditionally engaged in the hereditary occupations of oil trading and village teaching.In addition to these roles, they were also trained as soldiers, and when conflict arose, they were duty-bound to abandon their usual occupations, arm themselves, and serve their respective kings in battle.
