Vancouver International Burlesque Festival
The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival is an annual four-day festival that takes place every spring in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The festival features burlesque performers, comedians and musicians. The 2017 festival showcases was held at the Vancouver Playhouse (theatre venue) on March 31 & April 1, with Tit Talks at The Post at 750 on March 30, and The Diamonds in the Buff Industry awards on March 29. The 2018 festival dates was April 4–7. History The first festival took place in February 2006 and was founded by two local troupes; The Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society and Sweet Soul Burlesque. Performances were held at the Red Room, the Chinese Cultural Center and the New Westminster#Arts and culture, Burr Theatre. Rio Theatre
The Rio Theatre is an independent, multidisciplinary art house in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Built in 1938, the Rio served East Vancouver primarily as a movie theatre until 2008, when new owner, Corinne Lea, began to add live music and multimedia and multidisciplinary art events. The Rio has since become a well known cultural hub in East Vancouver, famous for launching several successful public battles to save the theatre. Vogue Theatre (Vancouver)
Vogue Theatre is an Art Deco / Art Moderne styled building originally built as a movie house, and currently used as an event venue for the performing arts. Situated on Vancouver’s “ Theatre Row", the building was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1993. History The Vogue Theatre was designed by the architectural firm Kaplan & Sprachman. Construction began in 1940 and was completed in 1941. It was operated by Canadian Odeon Theatres until 1984, then by Cineplex Odeon. A 1998 restoration project brought back the Vogue Theatre’s original appearance, as well as state-of-the-art light and sound systems being installed. Jo Weldon
Jo Weldon (born 1962), commonly known as Jo Boobs or Jo Boobs Weldon, is a performer, author, activist, and educator based in New York City. Weldon's body of work centers around stripping and striptease. She established and runs The New York School of Burlesque and wrote ''The Burlesque Handbook''. She is an advocate for sex workers' rights and freedom of sexual expression.
