Vanchinathan
Vanchinatha Iyer (1886 – 17 June 1911), popularly known as Vanchinathan or Vanchi, was an Indian independence activist. He is best remembered for assassinating Robert Ashe, the Tax Collector of Thirunelveli who was instrumental in closing V.O.Chidambaram Pillai’s Swadeshi Shipping Company and arresting him. Personal life Vanchinathan was born in 1886 in Sengottai to Raghupathy Iyer and Rukmani Ammal in a Tamil Brahmin family. His actual name was Shankaran. He did his schooling in Sengottai. He married Ponnammal and got into a lucrative government job. Indian Freedom Movement On 17 June 1911, Vanchi who was 25, assassinated Robert Ashe, the district collector of Tirunelveli, who was also known as Collector Dorai. He shot Ashe at point-blank range when Ashe's train had stopped at the Maniyachi Station, en route to Madras. He committed suicide thereafter. Robert Ashe (administrator)
Robert William d'Escourt Ashe (23 November 1872 – 17 June 1911) was the acting Collector and District magistrate of Tirunelveli district in Madras Presidency during the British Raj. Ashe had played a significant part in bringing about the closure of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, started by V.O. Chidambaram Pillai to take on the British India Steam Navigation Company that had for long monopolised trade in the southern part of the Bay of Bengal. He had also been responsible for charging V.O.Chidambaram Pillai and a colleague, Subramanya Siva, for which they were convicted. On 17 June 1911 Ashe was assassinated by Vanchinathan at the Maniyachi railway junction, between Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. After the shooting, Vanchinathan ran along the platform and took cover in the latrine. Some time later he was found dead, having shot himself in the mouth. Maniyachi
Maniyachchi is a township in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu situated approximately 40 km west of Thootukudi and some 30 km from Palayamkottai and Kovilpatti. History From once being a sparsely inhibited village, Maniyachchi was a site of significance during the Anti-Imperialist struggle in the Madras Presidency and it was here where the tyrannical British Collector of Tirunelveli Robert Ashe was shot by Vanchinathan an Indian Tamil freedom fighter who would later commit suicide after having killed the British Collector. Varahaneri Venkatesa Subrahmanya Iyer
Varahaneri Venkatesa Subramaniam Aiyar (2 April 1881 – 3 June 1925), also known as V. V. S. Aiyar, was an Indian revolutionary from Tamil Nadu who fought against British colonial rule in India. His contemporaries include Subramanya Bharathi and V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, who subscribed to militant forms of resistance against the British colonial government. He went into exile in Pondicherry, then under French rule, when his militant activities attracted a warrant for his arrest from the British colonial government. Aiyar was also a Tamil writer and is considered as the father of modern Tamil short story. He also translated the ''Ramavatharam'' of Kambar and Tirukkural into English. ''Kappalottiya Thamizhan'' () is a 1961 Indian Tamil-language historical drama film produced and directed by B. R. Panthulu. The film stars Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan and Savitri. It is based on the 1944 book of the same name by M. P. Sivagnanam, a biography of V. O. Chidambaram Pillai who founded the Swadeshi Stream Navigation Company to break the monopoly of the British over maritime trade out of India. Vanchi Maniyachchi Junction railway station is a junction railway station in Maniyachchi of Thoothukudi district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Sengottai (also known as Shencottah, Chenkotta or Shenkottai) is a town in the Tenkasi district, of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the gateway to southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Spread over an area of 2.68 km2 with a population of over 26,823, the economy of the town revolves around the cultivation of rice. History Sengottai was originally part of the Travancore Kingdom. Palayamkottai (also Palayankottai) is a neighbourhood in Tirunelveli City, incorporated within the Tirunelveli City Municipal Corporation. It is situated on the east bank of the Thamirabarani river, with the exception of its downtown area, which is present on the west bank. Etymology The region ''Palayamkottai'' in Tamil is a portmanteau of '''palayam''', which refers to a settlement, and kottai','' which translates to a fort. Historically, Palayamkottai served as the locale of an ancient fort that was employed for the administration of neighbouring districts. Today, the fort lies in ruins and is almost camouflaged by its surrounding old residential edifices. Villupuram Chinnaiya Manrayar Ganesamoorthy, better known by his stage name Sivaji Ganesan, (1 October 1928 – 21 July 2001) was an Indian actor and producer. He was active in Tamil cinema during the latter half of the 20th century.
