Valikamam West
Valikamam West (; ) is a Divisional Secretariat of Jaffna District, of Northern Province, Sri Lanka. In official government records and statistical data, the division is referred to as Chankanai, after the administrative center. Etymology Although the modern Tamil words and can mean ''pain'' and ''lust'' respectively, the etymology of Valikamam is derived from the classical meanings of the words, as used in early Tamil inscriptions. The name Valikamam () therefore translates to "the sandy village", whereas denotes the geographical marker. Valikamam West Divisional Council
Valikamam West Divisional Council (''short'' VWDC) or Chankanai Divisional Council ( or ) is the local authority for Valikamam West DS Division in northern Sri Lanka. VWDC is responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities. It has 25 members elected using a mixed electoral system, where 60% of members were elected using first-past-the-post voting and the remaining 40% through closed list proportional representation. History In 1987 there was a major re-organisation of local government in Sri Lanka. District Development Councils were abolished and replaced by Divisional Councils (Pradeshiya Sabha or Pradesha Sabhai). The ''Pradeshiya Sabha Act No. 15 of 1987'' was passed by Parliament on 15 April 1987 and on 1 January 1988 257 Divisional Councils started functioning. Thiruvalangadu
Thiruvalangadu is a village in the western suburbs of Chennai, India. The railway station is located on the Chennai-Arakkonam Route, the penultimate station before Arakkonam. Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple is situated at a distance of 5 km from the station. It can also be accessed by road on NH205 (Chennai-Avadi-Tiruvallur-Renigunta route). A slight detour of about 6 km from NH205 on to the left takes one to the temple town of Thiruvalangadu. Araly South
Araly () is a town in Northern Jaffna District, Sri Lanka. It is located 8.6 km (5.34 mi) North West from the city of Jaffna. It is bordered by sea on both sides and surrounded by villages like Ponnalai, Moolai, Vaddukoddai, Sankarathai and Navali. During the Sri Lankan Civil War, the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) occupied Araly in 1986. The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) briefly occupied the city in 1987. The LTTE again occupied the village from 1989 until 1995, when the Sri Lankan Army regained control. Vaddukoddai South-West
Vaddukoddai (, ) (also spelt Vatukotai, Vaddukkoddai) is small but important town in the minority Sri Lankan Tamil dominated Jaffna peninsula of Sri Lanka. This place famous to Cultural Dances & Hindu rituals. It became prominent with the founding of Asia’s first modern university level collegiate known as Batticotta Seminary by the American Missionaries from New England in 1823. Demography Most of the residents of the village are Sri Lankan Tamils, with the majority being Hindus and a few Christians.
