Battle Of The Valerik River
The Battle of the Valerik River on 11 July 1840 was fought as part of the Russian conquest of the Caucasus. It occurred about southwest of the fortress of Groznaya (now Grozny) between forces of the Imperial Russian Army and North Caucasian mountaineers led by the ''naib'' (viceroy) Ahberdila Muhammad. It remains famous because of the poem " Valerik" by Mikhail Lermontov, a participant. "Valerik" () is a war poem published in 1843 by the Russian Romantic writer Mikhail Lermontov. The battle The Battle of the Valerik River was fought on July 11, 1840, between the Imperial Russian Army and Chechen and Ingush mountain tribesmen, as part of the Russian conquest of the Caucasus. Mikhail Lermontov, a lieutenant in the Tenginsky Regiment, showed exemplary valor in the battle. Eyewitness accounts describe him astride a white horse, leading his men into battle with reckless abandon. Valerik (, , ''Valergthe'') is a rural locality (a '' selo'') in Achkhoy-Martanovsky District, Chechnya. Administrative and municipal status Municipally, Valerik is incorporated as Valerikskoye rural settlement. It is the administrative center of the municipality and the only settlement included in it. Valerik River
Valerik (, ) is a little river in Chechnya, a tributary of the Sunzha. The river's lower stream becomes dry in summer. It is long, and has a drainage basin of . Etymology The name of the river means "river of the dead" in Chechen. Possibly this river was a border between the Vainakhs and the Iranian peoples who lived in the steppe, and a place of bloody battles. A neighbouring river is named Mardan, which means 'river of the dead' in Ossetic languages. Battles In 1840 two battles were fought at the banks of the river between Caucasian Imamate murids and the Russian Imperial Army advancing towards inner Chechnya. The Russians under Apollon Galafeyev ( first battle) and Pavel Grabbe (second battle) defeated the army of Imam Shamil on 11 July and 30 October respectively.
