38th Chess Olympiad
The 38th Chess Olympiad (german: Die 38. Schacholympiade), organized by FIDE and comprising an open and a women's tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place from 12 to 25 November 2008 in Dresden, Germany. There were 146 teams in the open event and 111 in the women's event. In total, 1277 players were registered. Both tournament sections were officiated by international arbiter Ignatius Leong (Singapore). In a change from recent Olympiads, the number of rounds of the Swiss system were reduced from 13 to 11 with accelerated pairings. For the first time, the women's division, like the open division, was played over four boards per round, with each team allowed one alternate for a total of five players. In another first, the final rankings were determined by match points, not game points. In the event of a draw, the tie-break was decided by 1. Deducted Sonneborn-Berger; 2. Fast chess, also known as Speed chess, is a type of chess in which each player is given less time to consider their moves than normal tournament time controls allow. Fast chess is subdivided, by decreasing time controls, into rapid chess, blitz chess, and bullet chess. Armageddon chess is a particular variation of fast chess in which different rules apply for each of the two players. Lara Stock (born 26 May 1992 in Freiburg, Germany) is a Croatian chess player who holds the FIDE title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM). She won the World Youth Chess Championship in the girls under-10 section in 2002 and the European Youth Chess Championship in the girls under-12 division in 2004. Stock played for Croatia in the Women's Chess Olympiad of 2006. She achieved her third and final norm required for the WGM title at the 2007 Trieste Open. She lives in Freiburg. Ognjen Cvitan (born 10 October 1961) is a Croatian chess player. He earned the title of International Master by winning the 1981 World Junior Chess Championship, World Junior Championship. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster (chess), Grandmaster by FIDE in 1987. Cvitan was born in Šibenik (then Yugoslavia). He made his debut for Yugoslavia's C team at the 1990 Chess Olympiad, held in Novi Sad, recording a plus score on board one. At the Manila 26th Chess Olympiad, Olympiad of 1992, he played on the second reserve board for Croatia and earned an individual gold medal. Jaan Ehlvest (born 14 October 1962) is an Estonian-American chess player. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1987. Ehlvest was Estonian champion in 1986. Since 2006, he has represented the United States. He was named Estonian Athlete of the Year in 1987 and 1989. From July 1990 to July 1991, he was among the top 10 on the FIDE world rankings, peaking at number 5 in the list of January 1991. Career Ehlvest's tournament victories include the 1980 USSR Junior Chess Championship, the 1983 European Junior Championship, the 1986 Estonian Championship, the 1994 New York Open, and the 2003 World Open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
