Vale of Gala F.C. was an association football club from Galashiels, Selkirkshire. History The club is first recorded in November 1889, losing 2–1 at home to Selkirk F.C., Selkirk. Its first competitive football came in the first Border Cup in 1890–91, losing 4–2 at Kelso F.C., Kelso Athletic in the first round, and rage-quitting the association after the rejection of a protest against Kelso's "mixed colours". Despite this, Vale of Gala stepped up to the Scottish Football Association in 1891, and entered the Scottish Cup, East of Scotland Shield, and King Cup (Scotland), King Cup as well as the Border in 1891–92. Galashiels
Galashiels (; , ) is a town in the Scottish Borders with a population of around 12,600. Its name is often colloquially shortened to "Gala". The town is a major commercial centre for the Borders region with extensive history in the textile industry. Galashiels is the location of Heriot-Watt University's School of Textiles and Design. History To the west of the town, there is an ancient earthwork known as the Picts' Work Ditch or Catrail. It extends many miles south, and its height and width vary. There is no agreement about the purpose of the earthwork. There is another ancient site on the north-western edge of the town, at Torwoodlee, an Iron Age hill fort, with a later broch known as Torwoodlee Broch built in the western quarter of the hill fort, and overlapping some of the defensive ditches of the original fort. Kirkcaldy ( ; ; ) is a town and former royal burgh in Fife, on the east coast of Scotland. It is about north of Edinburgh and south-southwest of Dundee. The town had a recorded population of 49,460 in 2011, making it Fife's second-largest settlement and the 11th most populous settlement in Scotland. Kirkcaldy has long been nicknamed the Lang Toun (; Scots for "long town") in reference to the early town's main street, as indicated on maps from the 16th and 17th centuries.
