Valdemar Tomaševski
Waldemar Tomaszewski (former spelling ''Valdemar Tomaševski'', born 3 March 1965) is a Polish-Lithuanian politician who is also an activist for the Polish minority in Lithuania and Member of the European Parliament (MEP). Leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA), Tomaszewski has been an MEP since 2009. He sits in the European Conservatives and Reformists group, of which he is a Member of the Bureau on the group executive. Biography Tomaszewski studied mechanics at the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (now Vilnius Gediminas Technical University) in 1983 and graduated in 1990. First elected to Vilnius district council for Electoral Action in 1995, Tomaszewski was elected President of LLRaL in 1999. He was first elected to the Seimas at the 2000 election, winning 51% of the vote in the single-seat constituency of Šalčininkai. The Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (, TS–LKD), also colloquially known as the Conservatives (), is a centre-right political party in Lithuania. It has 18,000 members and 28 of 141 seats in the Seimas. Its current leader is Laurynas Kasčiūnas following the resignation of Gabrielius Landsbergis in 2024 after the party's loss in the recent election. The Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland () is a Polish order of merit created in 1974, awarded to persons who have rendered great service to Poland. The 2019 European Parliament election in Lithuania was held on 26 May 2019 to elect delegation from Lithuania to the European Parliament. It was part of the wider 2019 European election. The second round of the 2019 Lithuanian presidential election took place at the same time. 301 candidates from 16 parties stood for 11 seats. The 2014 European Parliament election in Lithuania was an election of the delegation from Lithuania to the European Parliament in 2014. It was part of the wider 2014 European election. Background In 2013, Elections to the European Parliament Act introduced public election committees. Prior to these elections, only two public election committees collected signatures, but none of them collected enough signatures to be registered and take part in elections. Results Analysis Although opinion polls and pundits claimed for large Social Democratic Party victory, but elections were won by the Homeland Union by around 2,000 votes. The Homeland Union won only in six municipalities (including Vilnius and Kaunas). The Social Democratic Party came at close second by the number of votes. Dalia Grybauskaitė (; born 1 March 1956) is a Lithuanian politician who served as the eighth president of Lithuania from 2009 to 2019. She is the first and so far only woman to hold the position and in 2014 she became the first President of Lithuania to be reelected for a second consecutive term.
