Val Xalino
Val Xalino (born August 19, 1953) is a Capeverdean singer and producer who currently resides in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is the father of the Cape Verdean singer and producer Robert Xalino. Biography Val Xalino was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente to his mother Maria who was a cook and his father Armando de Jon who was a great musician from the island during the 1950s and the 1960s. He made guitars along with his brothers Eduardo de Jon and Eddy Moreno. Together with his son Roberto, he later immigrated to Sweden and lived in the city of Gothenburg in the western part in 1977, Val immigrated later. His first album was ''Dilema d’imigração'' on the dilemma on immigration of the immigrants which was common in Cape Verde at the time. In 1987, he released '' Dança Dança T' Manchê'', one of the singles, ''Praia de Baía'' became a hit in Sweden and was heard on Swedish radio stations. Xalino later released ''Emoções'' in 1993. Jovino Dos Santos
Jovino dos Santos is a Cape Verdean interpreter, composer and an actor. Biography At age 18, he left the island of São Vicente to promote the Cape Verdean music traditions. He resided in Portugal and later in France which made him a nostalgic artist who sings songs related to injustice that the inhabitants suffered during colonial rule, who knew wars, guerrilla forces and economic crises, as well as emigration to the Americas (mostly to the US) and Europe. He sang both in Portuguese and Capeverdean Creole. Closer than ever to his origins, he give himself passions for playing on stage that he did for many years. Manuel d' Novas (February 24, 1938 — September 28, 2009) was a Cape Verdean poet and composer. Biography Manuel Jesus Lopes was born in Penha da França, one of the neighbourhoods of Ribeira Grande on the island of Santo Antão, he became one of the most important poets and composers of Cape Verde. His music is known all over the world, through performers like Cesária Évora, Bana and others. He lived in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. He visited 35 Rua de Moeda where other Cape Verdean musicians visited including Bana. He took part in the 2003 Baía das Gatas Music Festival. Manuel died on September 27, 2009, from a stroke he suffered for three years that started in Portugal, after staying at the hospital named Baptista de Sousa for about a week. Adriano Gonçalves (5 March 1932 – 13 July 2013), known by his stage name Bana and called the " King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country. Biography He was born in Mindelo on 5 March 1932, some sources said he was born on 11 March. In his childhood years, he was surrounded by music with local singers. At age four, he appeared with local singers. Bana, who was over seven feet tall, began his musical career during Portuguese colonial rule, when he worked as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B. Leza. In the 1950s, the singer, uncle of Cesária Évora taught Bana and many other artists the art of morna songs. Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s.
