History Vadstena Castle was originally built by King Gustav I in 1545 as a fortress to protect Stockholm from enemies approaching from the south. The fortress consisted of three smaller stone buildings facing Lake Vättern, three 31-meter wide ramparts, a courtyard, a moat and four circular cannon turrets. The original ramparts were torn down in the 19th century and the present ramparts were inaugurated in 1999. The stone buildings later formed the ground floor of the castle. On August 22, 1552, King Gustav I married his third wife, Catherine Stenbock, in Vadstena. One of the castle banqueting halls is called the Wedding Hall (), although its construction wasn't finished in time for the wedding. The reconstruction from fortress into a habitable castle began in the 1550s, when Prince Magnus became duke of Östergötland. Duke Magnus suffered from mental illness and was the only ...

Vadstena Town Hall
Vadstena Town Hall () is a former town hall in Vadstena, Sweden. It is the oldest preserved town hall in Sweden. History and architecture The town hall is the oldest surviving town hall in Sweden. It was built during the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located on ''Rådhustorget'', the oldest square of Vadstena which derives its name from the town hall. The square itself is mentioned in written sources for the first time in the early 15th century, and the construction of the town hall started after Vadstena was granted town privileges by Queen Margaret. The building comprises three distinct parts: the actual town hall, facing east; a tower; and a northern wing. The oldest part is the part facing east. Its construction date is referred to as 1490 in several sources; however, dendrochronological examination of a wooden beam in the building has concluded that the wood was felled before 1454–55. Possible explanations may be that older wood was re-used when building the town hall, o ...

Bridgettines
The Bridgettines, or Birgittines, formally known as the Order of the Most Holy Saviour (; abbreviated OSsS), is a monastic religious order of the Catholic Church founded by Saint Birgitta (Bridget of Sweden) in 1344 and approved by Pope Urban V in 1370. They follow the Rule of Saint Augustine. There are today several different branches of Bridgettines. History The first monastery of the order was founded in 1369 at the former royal castle of Vadstena. St. Bridget's granddaughter, Lady Ingegerd Knutsdotter, was Abbess of Vadstena from 1385 to 1403. Upon her death on 14 September 1412, direct descent from St. Bridget became extinct. This opened the medieval concept of "Bridget's spiritual children", members of the order founded by her, to be her true heirs. The order spread widely in Sweden and Norway, and played a remarkable part in promoting culture and literature in Scandinavia; this is to be attributed to the fact that the motherhouse at Vadstena, by Lake Vättern, was not ...
